Need Help. I found this rear bumper on another site. I really like the low elevation of the spare. Does anyoneone recognize it (brand?) or is it a custom fab job ? :dunno:

Thanks in advance.

Just to point something out, that rear bumper style looks great on paper, but the added leverage on the bolt were the carrier hinge is located always eggs out sooner or later, causing the carrier to rattle and bounce around while driving on the street, and the only fix is to torch out the old bushing and weld in a new one along with a new hinge bolt.

As for something more stout, this may be a better option, the whole carrier swings down to the ground, preventing you from busting your back trying to huff that tire around, also there are two pins and two hinges holding it in place. This is the same style I wish to fab up for my truck soon, hell I even have all the steel to do it :doah:

As far as your question goes, I would say that could be a manufactured bumper, Smitty Built used to sell one similar to that, however "some" home brew jobs can look professional.

Looks like an early Kennesaw Mountain bumper. Word to the wise, avoid them like the plague. I have one of their bumpers and it was a nightmare. From fit and finish (was not a true bolt on and they shipped it wrapped in plastic the same day they painted aka paint stuck to plastic) To their horrible customer service and outragous time lines (promised one month, took 4) They are nice in the beginning but dont like asking where your product is when they take too long.

Pumpkinator, that is a sweet bumper. Do you have any drawings / layout, or even a hand sketch of that? I have access to steel at work and can put that together ove time, just make it easier to start with some sort of sketch or drawing. What I have in my head, usually takes a lot of mistakes or scrap to get right when it comes to fab work. Thanks.

Lol, I should have stated earlier that the bumper pic I posted Isn't my work, neither is that my truck :D (wish my truck looked that good). That design belongs to these guys: http://www.blazenoffroad.com/store/Chevy-Rear-Spare-Tire-Carrier-Swing-Down.html

Haven't a clue if they're still taking orders, or what their actual ETA on shipping is, all I know is that I can build one myself for a fraction of the price and I wont get dinged for shipping. Right now I've spent only $110 in materials and I plan on having some leftovers when the job is done, I do have a couple of drawings but they aren't isometric or drafted using CAD or Solid Works....neither do I have a scanner:doah:

Christ, Pumpkin, you do that and want a job, do yours and post it, and methinks we have a deal! I might even drive to you to get it!

:eek1: Your telling me that you will spend your hard earned cash on fuel and provisions to drive all the way from PA to the furthest corner of WY...and then back to PA? Madness I say!

One reason to get my rig all pretty and strong is so when my girls are older, so I can take them cross country in it one at a time. Wyoming is on that list. I'll call it research, and if you're too far off I-80...I'll call it really, really good research.

Badmix is correct, it is a Kenn MTN bumper. I have one and have experienced all the same Negative experience he has. It rattles, took them 2 months longer than promised, had to mod and drill to bolt on., etc. etc.

AVOID THEM!

Wow I just followed the link to the 'tactical' place, $930.00 for all of the options not including shipping. Madness, I built mine from 100 bucks of steel and a day of welding, talk about a profit margin!!! ok how about rape!

Zoom in on the back of the ramcharger, I built that at home with a 4 1/2" grinder, a 3/8" drill, and a 110 volt welder. Damn hot that day too!!!

I have a TAG rear bumper on my Tahoe and while it took 2 months longer than was initially quoted, it showed up in good shape. Fits the truck well, uses a trailer spindle for the swing out. The finish is good too. Only problem is that I got a single gas can carrier vs a dual, and he put the wrong bolt pattern on the carrier. My truck is 8 lug, told him so and he put 6 lug like would have been stock on anyways.

He promised to ship up a new plate with the correct bolt pattern for me to weld on, but it never showed up.

I wouldn't recommend dealing with them.

For what it's worth, I used a spindle hinge from Comp4x4 on a rack I am building for my YJ and it is an awesome piece. Infinitely better than using a bolt for a hinge as was mentioned earlier. (Not the original question of the post, just a personal recommendation for anyone fabbing their own swing away).

The only problem is that that level of fabrication is far beyond my expertise, but I'll look to see what people can do around me. I've heard of Kurt doing stuff with DiY4x, but haven't seen a sample.

I'm going to be trying some welding, but if I want it to hold, I have no faith in my skills to fab something.

Honestly, go to a fab shop, they can build it directly to your frame. I had my front bumper built to my truck, you get the exact fit and finish you want and the cost is comparable. I would not deal with those Tactical (Kennesaw) people to save my life. A few of us have posted our dealings but seriously they were the biggest PITA of a company ive ever seen. They were very nice when I initially ordered it and they charge your card right away. The lead times were no where near what they said, they will lie to you. They told me mine was painted a week before it was to ship and it came with wet paint. It didnt fit like they said, parts I wanted were missing. When you call to ask the lead time they get more rude each time. I wish I had search prior to ordering.

The swing away is noisy. I had to add an addition "tension" latch to keep things quiet, it works and basically what they shouldve designed in the first place.

I'm looking for a swing out carrier as well. I went to my local shop. The guy does great work, but he would not even touch my Blazer for less than 1,000 bucks. After I had my blow out and not having a spare I really needed something ASAP. So I came up with this the other day at work. I know it's not the best but, I hope it gets me by for a little while until I can buy something better. Can of black paint and I'm good to go. For a while! :)
