Rear main leak, possibly?

Ok oil filter isn’t leaking at all. So that’s done. But I think I found the other culprit.

The back of the head or valve cover is dripping down, then collecting on the oil filter as well. You can see where the fluid has wiped the dirt away. Zoom in and you can see the oil color.

Again 200-300 miles and a possible head gasket leak??? Bro... wtf?

It’s possible for the valve cover.
I watched and watched as the truck was at idle, gave it gas and then gave it some more. Nothing from the distributor, oil pressure sender or intake. So It’s either the head or valve cover

Is that oil, or antifreeze?

I thought it was antifreeze too and it looks it in the picture.. But when you rub it between your fingers, it’s not, it’s oily. Could a mixture of both though.

This oil is fresh and the engine as well, so it’s super clean. But who knows at this point. It’s either coolant or oil and them mixed together. I’ve had no overheating at all, so I’m not sure how a head gasket blows or starts on an engine with 300 miles on it over the course of 1.5 years.

I was gonna say...that's either slightly odd colored clean oil, or it's antifreeze that may have some discoloration.

Sometimes on a clean white paper towel you can make out color a bit better. I know my buddy used to taste it, but blech. Not sure if all antifreeze tastes sweet but I can't stand it when I siphon and get a bit in my mouth.

I think things like this were a bit easier when there was one color of antifreeze. Green.

I doubt it is the head coould be the corner of the intake at head. My money is on the Valve cover.

Valve covers were a lot more lose than I thought. But at idle you can see fluid starting accumulate by the head right above the oil filter.

Nothing dropped and it may be leaked oil from the valve covers that collected there. Anyway, time will tell but the oil filter is good, nothing dripped just now after valve cover tightening.

Fingers crossed and thanks for all the guidance

It’s a bit aggravating. I’m trying to just be able to go have some fun in the desert. But if I can’t drive 10-15miles around the neighborhood then it stands to reason, I won’t even make the drive to the desert to have fun. Let alone make it back or.. Even if the truck can do the above And Im positive enough it can. Im just not overly confident it can.

I don’t mind a little weeping of oil, but this oil is coming with a small but consistent dribble. Not being able to locate it is even more perplexing and irritating.
Once the engine and exhaust are hot it’s impossible to do further digging around it.

Have you tried poking around with a borescope? I bought a wireless one for under $35 and use it all the time for looking into stuff I can't get to. Reads out to my cell phone screen.

in the picture of with the dip stick
looks like it has rtv around the base as well and looks to be wet.
remember the engines don't always sit level an lean to the rear a bit depending on your mounts.
oil could be pushing out from the blown out silicon to the dip stick tube not being fully seated correctly

try wiping the area completely dry even if you have to use brake cleaner to get rid of all the oil residue stains.
of its the easy fix.
I have use a 1/2 box wrench to tap the dip stick tube to be fully seated

Just wanted to update. The engine builder emailed asking for the Block number which I provided. Then I never heard back until I sent him another email.

He then responded that the crack baffles him a bit as the block was magnafluxed and checked but he said it’s possible he missed it. I doubt that he missed it, as you can obviously see it was “fixed” by someone. He magnafkuxes the blocks himself. So, my money is on the shop.

But it could have happened on the block prior and after he fluxed it and just didn’t notice that “fix”, but he broke the engine in so he would have put an oil filter on it, so who knows?

Conclusion:
He said if the engine continues to leak from that location. He has plenty of blocks and would just swap everything off of mine onto another block, no charge. I would just have to pull the engine and drive it to his house.

So anyway... fair response I would say.
