I bought an 88 k5 . Id like to rebuild the motor. Don't have any experience in building motors but my dad does. He's allways telling me it cost 2 grand to rebuild a motor . why does it cost so much? I just want a good strong stock 350

Sounds like he does it right!

Depends on what you want, a stock rebuild will run quite a bit less than that
your right Chris:bow:....you can do a ring and bearing rebuild for a few hundred, and if that's all it NEEDS, then why do more for a stocker.
$2K would be more like new pistons, bore, head job etc. Thats what I meant by done right!

For sure, I spent plenty on my 383, but I'm just saying that $2K isn't necessary for a decent job on getting the motor up and running again with no issues for a long time.

Another option is to buy a $1400.00 GM crate engine and have a brand new factory assembled engine with a 3 year / 100 000 mile warantee ;)

i just spent $1200 on a completely rebuilt motor for my burb, and i mean complete, they bored the cylinders over, new pistons, reworked the crank, new cam & lifters that were upgraded to a roller setup, even rebuilt the heads with all new valves and springs, everything was decked and cleaned & checked. $2 grand, is a bit high, unless EVERYTHING is getting replaced i would imagine.
i wasn't expecting to pay what i did, but i opted for the roller setup since it was all being torn apart and redone anyways.

my $1200 was everything including their labor for all machine work and even assembly. I dropped off in pieces and got it back as a near complete motor. :D
