Rebuilt motor w/ broke pistons UPDATE: 11/13/13 1.5yrs later upgrade time!

And with close to 11:1 compression you would have ended up with broken piston's like the OP

Diddo on that one. Well tomorrow my ypipe and bearing will be arriving. Haven't got a tracking number for the pistons. But maybe since they shipped straight from Keith black I might not get one. Or atleast it won't show up on my order status.
I had a question about taking off the rods from the old pistons and installing the new ones. The machine shop wants $18 EACH to do it. But we have a 20ton hyrdraulic press here at the house. I think we can do it ourselves but I wanted to make sure I had the idea of it right.
Basically to remove them, I just use a deep well socket that is the right size to press the wrist pin out. And put the piston up were it is level and isn't going to be at an angle when trying to press the wrist pin out.
Then installation is kindvd a reverse of removal. But pay ALOT more attention to the pin going in correct and not angled so I don't gouge anything.
Does that about some it up? Any suggestions or tips?

Find a different machine shop. I pay $20 to a machine shop to swap all 8.
Your supposed to use a torch to heat up the little end of the rod. I just don't have the equipment and it's cheap enough at the machine shop.
 
There really isn't another machine shop around that I know of. I might have to do some searching tomorrow to see.
But if we can do it ourselves then even better.
 
The small end of the rod has to be heated up if it is a press fit piston pin. Other wise order floating pistons, but the small end of the rod will still have to be honed.

I am actually shocked at what appears to be good quality on the ypipe. I had heard numerous bad reps about it over on thirdgen.org. Other then the way the one header T's into the ypipe instead of kindve a Y, but I can deal with that for now. There arent any good exhaust shops in my area anymore, none of them take big jobs that involve welding.:dunno:

I'm confused, that y-pipe looks no where near close to fitting :dunno:
 
Well the ypipe is actually two separate pieces. If you look just about the top right corner of my bearings you can see where they join. I just put it together and set it on the floor. Plus, remember this is for a 86 Trans Am with headers that are designed for the car:deal:. The passenger side header comes down at a weird angle and the drivers side basically comes back and faces straight down.
 
Nope lol this is for my other project vehicle.Its a 86 Trans Am, bought it without a motor the beginning of my senior year(last school year). After having a girlfriend that whole year/summer and not doing much of anything with it I finally decided to start on it. Long story short we pulled the 400 outve my dads 79 Blazer. It was a reman engine and had sat for about 3-4 years. Well not long after that I had #6 piston come apart. I think I have a picture of that somewhere in here. The top ring land came off. Then we rebuilt it and 200 miles later every piston looked like the piston in my first pics. So thats were this thread came in.

I realize that. I wasnt trying to say ive mastered it or anything with that statement. But I spent tons of times reading/researching/reading some more about tuning. Ive taken it in baby steps and havent even touched my spark advance tables. The only things I modified on the stock 305 tune was adding more fuel, changes to when the elec. fan turns on, turning the EGR/CCP off for doing learns, and lowering the rev limiter that the EBL has in the programming.
I DEFINITELY wasnt just throwing in random numbers into the tune or going about it blindly.

There is a lot of things that you can change that will have an undesired effect somewhere else. You also just can't blindly accept the data that you are seeing. You have to be able to judge if the data you get back makes sense. That takes some experience. I bought a programmer for my truck and I even have some experience tuning for import cars. But for $200 I let Brian tune my 383. He really knows what he is doing and can get you going pretty quickly. Up to you what you do but IMO was the best $200 I spent.
 
Im more of a person that loves to learn new things like this and take the time to get it right. Plus, you cant get experience if you never do it yourself. I looked over my options well before I bought the EBL and decided that was what I wanted to do. I am just beginning to gain some experience using it. Ive talked to the owner of dynamicefi and have posted on thirdgen.orgs subforum for tuning to get help with my base tune. I started with a stock 305ci f-body TPI tune.

My pistons were supposed to be here today since they said they would be here in 2-3 days. And that was Tuesday night. I decided to have the machine shop press the new pistons onto the rods. It will only be $6 each since I've already got the old pistons off the rods. I was hoping to have them at the latest by tomorrow morning so I could take them over before they close. Most likely that wont happen.
