Rebuilt motor w/ broke pistons UPDATE: 11/13/13 1.5yrs later upgrade time!

New parts!

Well I just stumbled over this thread from a little over a year ago. Figured I would give an update for everyone that helped me out. And its a pretty sweet update if I must say so myself:pimp:

First off, motor has ran just fine ever since the rebuild. I also painted the car about a year ago.

As I mentioned before I had more plans for the motor once I could gather the parts. So allow me to introduce you to those parts...

Nothing like a big bore TPI intake/ls style throttle body/aluminum heads/big cam setup!

Specs/brands:
Heads are Edelbrock Performer RPM 64cc
Cam is a comp cam XFI 280 around .550 lift and 280 duration
Intake is from FFI (First Fuel Injection) basically a huge version of the stock intake. This thing is massive compared to the stock version.

Other updates I have done along the way include new 1 3/4" Dyno Don Headers with matching ypipe(that fits exactly as it should!), SLP Loudmouth II exhaust system for a 4th gen installed by a shop, had a pair of subframe connectors installed at the same time, new rubber, plenty of other small things that I could go on about that aren't as noticeable.

Just getting the new pushrods today that I ordered after I measured for the correct length with a checker. I will finish putting the motor back together this weekend. Cant wait to drive this thing after the cam break-in. Got the high zinc oil in and was very liberal with the break in lube.

You went with a flat tappet cam?

Martin

Yes, the cost of going with a retro-fit roller setup didn't really outweigh the benefits to me. I made sure and got upgraded springs for the heads so they can handle the lift. It would've been nice if I could've afforded it, but as I said it wasn't as much a need as it was a want.

I went retrofit roller and I won't ever go back to flat tappet.

Glad its back together, now get it running!

I might eventually go roller, but it just wasn't going to happen this go around. Heck, once I get bored again with this setup I might just say forget it and go LSx:whistle:

Thanks though, hoping to be able to fire it up for break-in by the end of the weekend if it doesn't rain.

Big update! It runs! Got it fired up finally this afternoon before I had to go to work. Kindve ran into a issue of my plug wires not liking the heat of running at 2500rpms. So only got to run it for about 4 mins 2 different times at 2000-3000 rpms.

Also, it will sit at 2250ish rpms with me not touching the gas and the throttle stop not touching on the throttle body. I couldn't really troubleshoot that much since the plug wire issue ruined a couple wires. I'm thinking the IAC isn't adjusted to the new throttle body? Either that or I have a vacuum leak? Also, the headers were getting red. Ive read that it can be caused by an excessive rich condition (it was running rich on the wide band) or that the timing is really retarded. Didnt have a chance to put a light to it since I wanted to get it straight to the cam break in rpms.

Hope to get a chance later this week to troubleshoot. Hoping the excessive idle isnt a vacuum leak because that intake is a PAIN to take apart.

Another update. It ended up having one of the runner gaskets crooked and causing a massive vacuum leak. Got that fixed and it now sits and idles around the commanded 950rpms. I have the EBL Flash computer for the fuel injection and have been tuning it here and there. Actually driving the car today to work/school so will have plenty of drive time to do VE Learns and datalogs. Man does this thing sound great, I feel REALLY bad for my neighbors.

Here is a video of the idle.
