a buddy came over and we knocked out the th400 in my garage today, way easier than i thought!

it went together really well and only took a few hours to do.
i used a raybestos clutch pack and HD kevlar band and i was gonna do a shift kit, but i didnt read the instructions. you gotta do it during the rebuild. i thought it was just a valve body only type deal.

i really suggest trying it yourself, at the very least. tear it to pieces and take the pile of parts to get rebuilt or something.
theres no magic inside that case, couldnt believe it!!

just gotta say im proud of myself! next is the sector shaft swap!:eek1:

oh and the B&M trans pan i got didnt clear the stock valve body, WTH?
i payed for something that fit, not very pleased. i had to grind about an 1/8 of an inch to get it to line up and not rub the valve body.
also did the 205 for it a few weeks ago while i was bored one saturday.

just wanted to share the EASE of doing this yourself, ive got less than five hours in the trans and tcase bench time. very doable on an ambitious saturday. thanks for sure to the ck5 member for some awesome tech articles!

i see a big problem.

you got a round 6 tcase adaptor on it.

the tcase is a fig 8 style.

whats your plans ? ? ?

hah! good catch, that adapter is there to make the rebuild go smoother. basically just to have it stand up easier. the fig 8 one is still in the truck, havent pulled to original trans yet.

da, its goin in back in the 84 daully. definatley a wierd contraption on the front output.

seen pics never in person tho.

i did my own 203 range box and 205 full reman and upgrade.

write up in tech section.

i cant even count how many people ive linked that to, bitchin info.
trade you the syncro front output and fork for a 32 spline one!

what did you use to hold the direct drum assembly ( that large mass of parts that goes in just before the pump) while you were putting it in the case? That SOB is slippery, and heavy to hold with just a hand.

i think i know what youre talkin about, i used a thick wire, called romex or something like that. pulled it down to bare copper and wrapped it around the top of the shaft, then left enough to grab with one hand and and use the other hand to guide the shaft down in to place.

well is that the one where you gotta align all the clutches? i seperated the two, i set down the one into the roller bearing first then dropped in the clutches. then i jiggled it to align the clutches, not put it all in in one piece.

I just torn apart a th400 we where going to put in my nephew's blazer. Unfortunately, it has issues. I was about to comment about that strange cover on the back of that NP205.

Slick, I'll have to add that tools to my next build.

i used that for this assembly, then got stuck for a while. confused on the snap rings, but this thing is heavy and cumbersome. i used vaseline to stick the thrust washer to the bottom of it and the bearings that go right on top of the shaft here.

mmm, I can hardly wait. I just built one for my Vette, and have one sitting for my MobyDick build.

biggest thing everyone says i know that do trannys is watch out for 400's as thay have a few diffrent style's of checkballs on the valve body layout.

make sure you can watch were thay go and reinstall them back there. most of the shift improver kits or shift kits show a few diffrent ways.

Hey Brett could you impose your knowledge to the dude that blew his tranny trying to get home. I took a stab at what little his options were, but know you have a better idea what goes with what for trans/t/c options.
