I've wanted to install a winch on one of my Blazers for about 30 years now. I finally did it to my trail/driver 1990. I originally wanted one of the Warn winch bumpers and actually bought one off of Craigslist awhile back...then realized that it was for the '73 - '80 frame horns.

So my neighbor, a metal machinist, was looking at what I had and said, "I can build you one. Let's do it next weekend." He looked at my pile of scrap parts from my '77 Blazer parts truck tear down and suggested using the U-Haul hitch I had taken off of it and mount it inside the frame rails. Cut a hole in the stock bumper, build the cradle, and there we go.

I accepted.

The winch I got.

First I had to tear down the front.

At the machine shop we cut the hitch down to size and welded up the mounting tabs for the frame.

Man, it's nice to know someone with a full on CNC metal shop at his disposal. I asked him if it was OK that we were there on the weekend and said, "Let me ask the Supervisor. He says it's OK." It turned out he was it.

Here's the receiver cut down with tabs welded on and nuts tacked in place. He had me doing the gofer work like painting, cleaning edges, and test fitting. I definitely didn't mind.

The work building the hitch cradle.

Final fit with bumper mounts and tow hooks installed.

Tacked tow hook nuts. There was not going to be any way to tighten them with the mount in place.

Test fit of the cradle base.

Back home with the front end of the truck put back on over the hitch. Eventually I'll fab something up to put the license plate back where it belongs when the winch isn't installed.

Winch mounted.

You can see that I don't have the proper winch power cable disconnect for a removable winch yet. I'll be ordering one to make it truly removable. I also may take the air dam off permanently but I wanted to see how it fit with everything stock back on the truck.

I figured I'd spring for the $30 Tuffy winch bolt lock to maybe keep the thieves looking for an easier winch to steal.

After all of the effort I wasn't going to put a regular receiver pin in. I can barely get my hands in there to turn the key to lock the Master locking pin but definitely worth it.

Kind of hard to see in this picture but this is how far it sticks out in the front. I just have to keep from smashing it into the ricer Hondas in the parking lots.

And a poser shot out camping last weekend.

So I asked my neighbor if I could pay for anything and I had to give him something for his roughly 8 hours of work on this thing. He just said, "Fill up my gas tank and we'll call it even." So $67 of gas into his Dodge Hemi is what he charged me. I have good neighbors.

That is seriously badass. Nicely done and good on your neighbor for helping.

If i were to put a winch on the front of my blazer, that is exactly what i would do. Looks great. you should put a patent on it and then sell it to ORD. I would deff but that hitch if someone sold it.

Ha, thanks guys. I can't take any credit for the design though. It was all the CNC neighbor. He just eyeballed it and built it. It must be nice to have skills like that.

I'll take one please... Cash in hand. :D

Now you just need to make a spring loaded plate bracket with an extention to fit over the reciever but still be able to flip the plate down to fit the winch in.
