So how do I know what is behind this 454? They came out of a 1973 2x4 Suburban. Besides that I know nothing.

Recognizing a TH400?

th350 will have a square pan with one corner lopped off
th400 will have a pan with 2 corners lopped off
th400 will have a pan with 2 corners lopped off
or 400 pan looks like state of texas.
400 won't have a kickdown cable, and the vacuum modulator is on the front half whereas the 350 is towards the back. 350 also has a kickdown cable.

TH400 has a 6 bolt tailhousing, TH350 and 700R4 have a 4 bolt one.
