My wife got me a new stereo for dad's day. Did alot of head scratching trying to figure out how to mount it and make it theft deterrent. This is what I came up with. One .50 cal ammo can, some 1/2 " bolts, jigsaw to cut holes in the back for the wires. Used the packing foam from the stereo box to cushion/mount in the can. A padlock keeps the lid secure when I'm not around. Whatcha think, am I crazy???

Yep fits the title. But good idea I don't think the foam will hold it for an extended period of time. What about building /putting it in the console the whole idea about theft deterent is out of site out of mind.

No console in my rig. If someone wants this stereo, they will need a sawzall or a torch to get it out. In the process they will have to cut approx 1/2 inch of steel, and that is gonna be noisy!!!

Nah, redneck woulda duct-taped the styrofoam in :haha:

Seriously, that's pretty podunk. :D

Why not install it into your glove box? I definitely go by the idea of out of sight, outta mind. I am installing a radio delete plate in place of the factory radio, then installing the stereo in the glove box. Just gonna buy a headunit with an RF remote rather than an infared remote and control my stereo that way.

However, the ammo can idea is definitely awesome, and perfect Red Green material :D (Only Canadians, or Americans with no lives that watch CBC will understand, lol)

I guessnoone noticed the "decoy" radio in the stock location. I don't want it in the glovebox where I can't reach it without a remote( one more thing to break/lose).

If she can't find you handsome at least she can find you handy, or whatever the Possum Lodge thing is.

Woohoo!

I was hoping at least someone would know what I was talking about!

I dig everything except the foam. Why not mount it in some fairly dense open cell foam so that the foam will buffer road shock and whatnot to help prevent the radio from skipping. Just a thought.

radio mount

Good idea as far as theft. The only thing that concerns me is location. Might think about moving it over about 8-10". The reason I say this is that god forbid some jackass pulls out in front of you and you hit them your leg is going to try to go through that ammo can. Most likely your leg will loose. Might also hit it on a rough trail as well. Other than that it's exactly what you want apparently and thats all that matters.

I trial fitted it over to the right-heater/blower box interferes, and heater would be blowing on it. I always wear my seatbelt, and radio can is bout 5" above my shin when sitting in the seat. The open cell foam I might try after seeing how it does on the road/trail. Don't waant to enclose it completely with foam cause then it would have no air circulation to keep it cool. I like my music loud, so its gonna get warm when I crank it up. Thanks for all the ideas everyone. This is a work in progress, so we'll see how it turns out.

I had an air circulation problem with some CB 'stuff' mounted in the console. I bought 2 small 12v fans from Radio Shack. One blowing in and the other out mounted on either side. Works great and keeps everything nice and cool.

Ya my concern would be heat dissepation. It needs some air around it so it dont overheat. Iknow its not very secure or anything but the best redneck stereo instal I've seen is a radio duct taped on top of Dash. Git-R-Done!!!
:rotfl: :woot:

It is a detachable face. Do you REALLY expect me to chop up a cherry 1st gen dash????
In all honesty, if it's not a mint condition, numbers matching, show truck, I don't think it would hurt too cut the dash for a din size stereo. But that's just my opinion.
