This ought to get some attention.......so let the razing and comments begin.

Yep....you read the heading right.....I regeared a 10 bolt rear axle from 3:42 to 4:10. Which means I need to change the profile of the Blazer.

I decided to learn how to change gearing because.........I like to work on my truck. And it's good experience for myself.

I know, I know......for the money, I could have bought a set of 3/4 or 1 ton axles, rims, tires, possibly a locker. But that's not the point. It's my Blazer, and I'll do whatever I feel like doing.

I've done alot of research on here, and I agree to a point that the heavier axles are better for certain things....but I chose to regear it instead.

Now, when I go to 34" or 35" tires, I'll upgrade to the heavier axles....and if they don't have a locker, I'll put one in.

Regearing isn't hard.....but it can be time consuming, you need certain tools, and you have to be patient. Basically, follow the instructions and you'll do just fine.

For the rear axle, I also installed a Powertrax No-slip locker which was a breeze.

I'll do the front axle in a week or so....I can't put it in 4 wheel drive until then (and after the break-in period).

And when I do go to heavier axles, I'm sure I won't have any trouble getting rid of the 10 bolt axles to someone that doesn't want to regear or buy the 3/4 or 1 tons.

The transmission loves the new gears....and so do I. :wink1:

I just changed mine to 4.56's cause 4 wheel parts had free labor to 500 bucks, so I had them do the rears and I'll so the fronts in a week or 2. Put me right back in the power range. I use it for hunting and camping, so I'm not worried about breaking them. They have a lifetime warranty.

It's your truck man so you get to do whatever you want!! If you don't need the heavier axles then it's a good move on your part IMO

Did you have to use a different carrier to go higher than 4:10's ?

The 4x4 shop here says that the original open carrier in a 10 bolt will not work with 4:56's and up.

there is what is called a carrier break... one carrier came stock with something like 308 to ? and the other came with ? to 513 or something like that. Mine had the stock 308s and I used a "thick" gearset with that same carrier. Hope that helps, If not just shoot me a pm. This was a long time ago for me.d
