A buddy of mine was wondering on how (if even possible) to register a military humvee hes getting in CA. No VIN number so....i'm guessing its not gonna happen?

find a resident of new mexico or arizona i hear you can build your buggy put a jeep grill on it and licence it there as a jeep. :haha:

If he bought it legally, the selling agency will give him the Form 97 or SF97 or somesuch, which he can present to the DMV to get a legal title -- there IS a VIN, btw, just a weird one.

If he has no form 97, he did not buy it legally.

Well, same rule -- if they have an ex-military vehicle, it's either legal (with form) or was sold as parts or stolen or something (no form.)

This isnt true. Not all miliarty vehcicle are sold with an sf97, even if they are runners. Check the govliq.com many vechicles just dont have the forms.

With out a title or a SF97 in your name good luck regisitring it....atleast in Tennessee. Ask me how I know.

Doesnt sound like they have the form. He's asked the dmv and he talked to someone who knew about it and its a HUGE PITA with a low chance of success. Unless you guys know any tricks to this, it doesnt sound like its gonna work. Though I doubt you;d get pulled over in a humvee... We're wanting to take it down to hollister hills, and we dont have a trailer, so he really wants to register it

is it illegal to just take the vin off of a diesel and bolt it on the dash?
In every state I have heard of...

I know PA doesn't **** around about that VIN number ****.

You mean a VIN from a Chevy truck and put it on an AMGeneral? You think they'll notice? :eek1:

Tampering with VIN's is very seriously illegal, and doing that one would be very seriously dumb ;)

It very well could be. Jessie and Ian (from Extreme 4x4) started what they called Suburban Gorilla (Or was it Guerilla). It is a hummer body on a donor Chevy chassis.

I was thinking about doing one until I saw the price. Almost $15K to build it the way I want it (on top of the price of the donor).

If you can register a Kit Car, you should be able to regiater a HumVee. Add a chevy emblem and a radio and tell them that its a kit car.

No, don't try this:mad:

Is he getting it from someone in CA or out of State? If out have the guy register it and then buy it.

I was serious. And not trying to make anyone mad. I made a little joke out of it, but what is the difference between a car that you build from the ground up and a ex-military vehicle with no title or sf-97.

Assuming that it was bought legally, its just a vehicle that needs to be assigned a VIN, title and registration by the state. Like a home built car, boat, trailer, etc. states should have a proceedure to inspect, certify and get them legal.
