He's getting it free. It works, runs. Got a massive winch on the front, has everything. He's driven it and it runs/drives/everything great. :D:D

EDIT: Otherwise, I'd defeintely agree. Normally WAY overpriced, etc

If he got it for free, tell him to spend so money on a trailer and forget getting a title for it.

I think he'd like to drive it on the street. Why wouldn't he? Driving around in a Hummer would be awesome.

have him to tell the dmv he went overboard on his bummer, so the vin is legit, bam problem solved

Then spend the money on one with the right paper work.

I was gonna suggest the kit car route... Prolly wont wont. You need the paperwork from the kit car manufacturer, paperworl from the donor, then the vechicle needs to be inspected...I guess you could say its a tremor muv (the ones that you build entirely yourself, and just get a cheap blazer or what ever and say that was the donor...

But that's not the situation and I dont think he wants to do that either. Thats why he is asking how he can get it registered.

In Massachusetts they run a background check or whatever and you can get a "Salvage" title. There should be some kind of VIN or serial number they can run to see where it came from and if it is legit. (Not stolen).

I was able to get a title for a boat that was "abandoned." There is a process to go through and it takes some time. Don't know how it goes where you're from.

The problem is that this vehicle has never been registered, as it was never in private hands. The SF97 allows the state to *create* a new entry for it, if that makes sense.

My question is, where did this thing come from with no SF97? The M998's are a bit odd, as they are NOT sold through DRMO (except as parts, cut up), so complete trucks either sneak out, rarely, or came through in that helicopters-for-Humvees deal some years ago.

That's why (assuming that its legit/legal) I would think you would use the same procedure as a home built vehicle.

1. A military HMMWV with a state issued tag will draw attention.

2. If stopped, any cop with half an IQ point is going to check the VIN and if they remember their training, they are going to see something wrong with the VIN.

3. And furthermore, any bit of knowledge of vehicles is going to turn into a pseudo inspection on the side of the road and wham bam thank you maam, homie is going to county with a VIN tampering charge and yes, I would do it because it's wrong and there's thousands of folks out there that have spent time and money to complete the process right, not wrong....................

Hey just a little update, my buddy doesnt want to go thru all the work etc and he has his truck to worry about, no parking (hes my neighbor so this is still a big problem with me too:doah:), etc etc. So he said I could have it :D:eek1:.

I had to go down to the dmv today anyway (stupid plate fell off my motorcycle ) so i asked what I should do. The first 2 ppl had no idea but then some other guy mentioned the form 97 like you guys said. And I said theres no form 97, no papers, no nothing. After aksing a bunch of people they gave me a form for registering a vehicle thats never been registered/out of the system and said that that would work although its a generic form and not military specific or anything. So i asked again to make sure this would work for a military vehicle and they assured me it would. I have my doutbs, but its worth a try for a badass towrig/light wheeler/etc. :D

IN az... If you have a bill of sale of any kind and its street legal, MVD will inspect it and issue you a VIN number. If you claim the value to be over 5000.00 I believe it is, they require a bonded title. It can get costly, but its easy.

Isnt that what I said? Well maybe not exactly, but I know a guy in AZ that built a buggy thing, nothing on it was jeep but low and behold he slapped a jeep grill on it they gave him a VIN and titled it as a jeep.

Yea, you can name it what ever you want. I have a buddy that gave his buggy his last name...

Until I see some pics of this "Free Humvee" I'm calling B.S. :deal:

BTW -> Civilian Humvees are actually getting cheap enough on the used market to just go buy one.
