Reliable commuter? Warning: Heep question!

The whole engine oil thing seems kind of odd to me. I spent many years working directly with Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep engineering performing vehicle tests and evaluations and never heard anything about the 4.0L needing some very special oil. Also being in an off-road club for going on 12 years I personally know at least 20 people with 4.0L powered Jeep vehicles, and my mom had two 4.0L Grand Cherokees, and none of them have used "special" Mopar oil or additives and many have high mileage. I know at least one guy has over 130k on his 4.0L TJ using off-the-shelf oil. The woman who bought one of the Grands off of my mom is local and I see her in it all the time. Not sure how many miles but think it's around 6-7 years old now so sure the mileage is getting up there.

I know those ingredients are very important during initial break-in (i.e. if you just rebuilt the engine) and there are specific oils and additives available for this....but prior to this post I have never, ever heard of the 4.0L requiring this.

It's all in the Chrysler Jeep records and was well documeted in the rubicon owners forum.

They just got lucky...

Well turns out the TJ was still available, but a total lemon. Check engine light on and rough idle with a few misses. No cruise either which is no good on the highway.

Found something a lil different:

Not a Heep, but maybe worse! Anyone know much about these escapes? The lady has offered to lower her price. Pretty loaded for that price. Can't get a new jeep equivalent for that. I'm going to check it out tomorrow

Can you provide a link to the "Chrysler Jeep records" or at least explain what you mean?

"Well documented" in the rubicon owners forum? Again, please provide a link to this documentation. So the majority of the people on that page are having catastrophic engine failures on 4.0L's because of the lack of zinc in off-the-shelf engine oil? If anybody has had failures have the engines been scientifically reviewed to verify that was the exact cause. Let's also not forget that the 4.0L TJ Rubicon specific forum referenced likely represents about 0.001% of the 4.0L powered Jeep vehicles on the road...so not exactly the site you should count on for the be-all, end-all 4.0L engine information.
