Removing 14bFF locknut? (Not "Do I need special socket"!)

Just go get another 14 bolt lol. So this system you speak of has one nut that rides against the bearing, a wire spider looking thingy that you fold arms down into the grooves of the first nut, then a lock nut that goes on after that, which you also bend the arms of the spider thingy down in the grooves of?

Something like that. I can't get it apart to know for sure, but that is also what the Chevy service manual shows. Just like the front hubs, but in place of the center washer (the one with the little holes that ride on the pin) you have a thin metal one with tabs sticking out. After you tighten the outer nut, you bend the tabs into the grooves to lock it in place. I have bent back all the tabs, and can't move the outer nut for the life of me.

If you get it off I recommend you replace the nuts and washers with the set from a Dana 60 Front with the pin. The socket fits around the nut and does not allow it to cock and come off. I only need 1 socket for both of my axles. I had the MRs at work turn about 1/8 of an inch from the outside diameter of the socket where it flares and it fits perfect inside a 14FF hub.

How much do those cost? And I don't know any machinists. :doah:

But I agree this sounds like a good idea. It shouldn't be too bad if I don't get the Incredible Hulk to put them back on. :woot:

I got mine from E-bay I think it was $12 a set for 2 nuts and a lock washer.

I just did a search for dana 60. I know parts mike also sells them.

Some places sell recessed sockets so the nut actually fits inside the socket....probably work a lot better in this situation. Please God, do not put a torch to it.

I didn't plan on trying to torch about a pound of grease (unless of course I got so fed up with it that I just wanted to destroy it). :weld: :k5: :angry1:

Is it possible to beat a smaller socket on over it. Then use a few feet of pipe on a stong arm. That is what I had to do with the five piece lock nut on my Diesel topaz front hub.

The locknut round. Round with six round "holes" in it. The socket is round like a hole saw, with six teeth that stick down to engage the holes.

It may be possible to beat a large socket (not 6 point, but star type) over it, but it would be like a 2 1/2" socket. Not likely.

You are in bad shape. I am sorry for my answer. I wasnt paying attention. I normally just use a screwdriver and a hammer but this is by no means easier. It will fall out some day you dont want it too. lol.

The way [my] socket fits on that aduster nut, you really can't apply torque like that (it was the first thing I tried). Since it is only touching in those six places, it just wants to tip and come off. I even tried putting a ratchet strap on it to hold pressure on the socket, against the nut. But it couldn't hold enough to keep it from cocking and just popping off.

Put an extension (longer the better...mine is 18" long) on the socket and put a jack stand under the extension. You will then be able to put a piece of pipe over the breaker bar and jump on it to get it off and won't have problems with the socket comming off the nut.

Interesting. I will surely try this. Tomorrow is the day I get these darn nuts off, I declare.

I just want to say thank you to all that looked or offered help. I got them off! I tried Triaged's way, and it helped but not enough. So I wrapped 2 ratchet straps and 4 bungee cords around the extension by the socket, and secured them around the drum. This kept the socket from coming out. Then I just used the 20" of extensions I had, a jackstand, and a 4' piece of pipe on my ratchet. They must have been put on to something well over 250 ft/lb! But now they are correct. :woot: :saweet: :thumb: :waytogo:

Good thing too, while I was in there I found I had a leaking hub seal so those brakes were oily. The other side not only had a stuck adjuster, but the adjuster lever had popped off.

I bought some D60 locknuts on eBay. How much am I going to need to modify the locknut socket to make it fit in the 14bFF hub? Could I just do the old angle-grinder boogie?
