I have applied Indian Head Gasket Shellac or the Permatex gasket sealer that hardens (cant recall if it's #1 or #2..),on the metal part of a seal before,if it feels like it wasn't a tight press fit,or on things like timing covers that are thin stamped metal and might not make full 360 degree contact all the way around...
Silicone would be OK probably,but it is slippery,hopefully the seal wont want to slide out after while--unlikely probably,once it hardens up and bonds good..
