I had another thread but I want to get more eyes... I'm trying to pull my axles to replace the bearings and oil seals. I pulled the diff cover and found the little bolt that holds the center pin in place. It's just a little rounded already, must be from the shop that did this job for me last time.

So I'm trying to go easy here. Does anyone know what size head is on that little bolt? A 5/16 is the perfect size to totally round the thing out, just a little too big. but 9/32 won't fit. 8mm is too big and 7mm too small. I'm stumped. If I knew it was not too tight I could fall back on vice grips or something, but I don't. It could be tight. Any suggestions?

Also, is it okay to rotate the ring gear once the pin is out? I thought there was some mistake that could be done during this job that would screw things up, but I can't remember what it was.

Well, I went and bought a 5/16" six point socket in 1/4" drive with an extension. It grabbed. 12-point stuff should be illegal. I'm really hesitant to reuse this pin though. Can anyone tell me where I could get a replacement? Or do people just buy a grade-8 bolt and grind off the threads?

It's right. I can't believe it, but they had one at Checker. I'm in the clear. :D

glad you found what you needed.you never know what your local parts place has.its probably just a stock replacment.which for your needs is probably perfect.if the cross pin is worn you can get a replacement from the gear guys also that is hardened and wont wear as fast.but if it looks good, you should be fine with just a new crossbolt.;)
