Removing front axle shafts - Dana 44

Yeah, the tire is hitting the fender... The side closest to the cab, and away from the bumper. Here are a couple of pics.

I'll pull the steering box and inspect it. Hopefully it's obviously shot.

Centering pin is busted, you will see an area on the leaf spring that has been wiped, every time the axle moves front to back it scrapes the spring.
Looks like that truck was abused, lots of problems so far, hopefully the end of it is near

Yeah..... lift and tire size? Maybe the tires are too big and they are hitting.

Otherwise

you got other problems already mentioned :(

Good call on the leaf springs! I had checked the tightness of those U-Bolts not all that long ago, but they had definitely loosened up a bit. Torqued them back down and my wheel behaves normally now.

Now to address my sieve of a steering box, and the passenger side ball joints and spindle bearings.

Thanks a lot!

Did you still have the center pin? If the axle moved at all, it sounds like the center pin is either broken, or the U-bolts were crazy loose. (like 1/2" loose)

Good point. The center pin is what "indexes" into the axle and helps the U-bolts hold it in position. It's like a "dowel" that locates the axle where it should be, The U-bolts just hold the axle against the center pin and springs (like the above linked pictures)
