So I’m taking all the smog BS off my blazer because its green stickered and I want to run some long tube headers and clean up the engine bay. What do I need to watch out for when doing so? I have a carb no fuel injection. Can I just cap everything or will I mess up my computer by removing the o2 sensors? Any advice before I start taring it apart?

What is this "green sticker" that you refer to? I have a fleet of trucks that I brought with me when I moved to Bakersfield from Colorado.

All of my trucks have had all the air injection system removed and some of them have headers.

You will need to keep your O2 sensor for the TBI computer. The Cat and air injection can come off without affecting the operation.

Thats what I thought. Then I hear about this green sticker. Woo Hoo I may be able to actually tag and drive some of my junk one day.

Tom, green sticker is for off road only. You could drive it on logging roads I think. Not on the street though.

Dont they shoot people in cali for removing smog stuff???
Not everywhere. Most of the rule counties like mine do not require the yearly smog inspection. My county only requires it when putting a 1975 or newer vehicle in your name.
I bought my K5 in Jan of 1990 and I have not smogged it since then. So I'll let you guess as to how factory my engine is. :wink1:

red blaze: get an older carb and HEI, then you can ditch the computer and all wires. Some new vacuum routing and switches will be necessary though. If you remove the O2 sensor, that will affect the computer, same with the air injection. The computer will then mess with the carb. I'm in the same boat, except I'm trying to keep it on the street.

Green sticker is what they use on dirt bikes "offroad only". I dont run TBI just a carb. can i strip all the smog stuff with just my carb no FI? How do i know which carb to use?

Whats wrong with the TBI setup?

Unless you are having trouble with it I would keep the injection system for the reliability of it and off camber situations.

Just pull the air injection stuff to clean up the engine bay and pull the cat off as well so the engine can breath better.

I also wouldn't want to change over the distributor to the HEI.

lol, no no
He has the CCC, computer controlled carburetor I think. So he has the O2 and wires. It's not a TBI setup. The carb you need is one without the wires but still an electric choke. Those are normally on the fullsize trucks around the same years, or older late 70's blazers. Some of the federal emissions blazers from NON CA have the older carbs up until mid 80's. You have to ask for one or look for one in a Jyard. Pull the hat and check for any wires. Only 1, and that's the choke wire. Find an HEI from the same year trucks, with vacuum advance.

The only problem with messing with the computer is the 700r4 transmission lol. The carb's TPS tells the computer how to control transmissions lockup. If you have a 400, nevermind. Changing carbs, messing with O2, etc etc means you have to change how the TC works.

If you take it off, keep it and be prepared to put it back on. The state is now smogging diesels, and soon motorcycles, so I would say its a safe bet that smogging all cars 76- is going to happen in the near future. I hear they even want to GO BACK to 1965-66 here from the smog guys I know.

There are still ways of getting a car to pass smog, but its getting tougher to find someone to do it and more expensive. Last person I know who had to have it done, took 2 months to find someone and cost $250. They will crack down on this soon, there will always be away around for our old trucks, but new cars with bar codes on the door jamb and engine, not as easy.

and if this happens to anyone who already took everything off, apply for financial aid to fix the vehicle. They supply up to 500 bucks I think to pass smog. If it still doesn't, I think they will let it pass or pay you for the vehicle. I don't remember, sorry. But either way, if they don't help then I'd be up in arms about not having to follow this back when I possessed the parts.

I don’t think my carb has any electrical components on it. Its an aftermarket Holly carb. I want to move to a TPI setup sometime but I don’t know how to hook it all up, seems intimidating.

ALL original emission equipment must be on the vehicle in order to apply for the CAP program (Consumer Assistance Program).

I just i will just start removing things until i notice it running diffrent. Will it run fine without the charcole canister and no o2 sensor?

I will run fine with no Charcoal canister. The one thing I would worry about taking off, is the EGR.

If you have no computer controlled carb, then the O2 isn't doing anything anyway I don't think.

GM didn't just throw random un-needed parts at these trucks.

By the sounds of it, this has been done already. if it has the holley, the O2 sensor is doing nothing much anymore.

Maybe put a pic or two up so we can maybe have a better idea whats there.

From what I heard from somebody, starting this year, you still have to have smog for the green sticker. So, going green sticker just to avoid smog check for your off-road vehicle is no longer an option.
