removing spring perches

im gona have to cut the spring perches off my 14b (solid cast ones). any suggestions on how to get them off? i have a small set of torches but i dont think they will be able to cut through the thick casting, i also have an angle grinder and sawzall

I used an angle grinder with a thin "zip cut" disc on mine. Had them off in about 5-10 minutes per side.

x3... cut off wheel to get them close, then a BFH to finish the job.

dont worry about it, if you want them off bad enough you will use as many as it takes....so get to cuttin pal.

im not worried about how many it takes, i only have one half way cut off and have used like 5 or 6 discs already

im just messin with ya, i can say you get what you pay for with cutoff discs. i would suggest buying only quality cutoff discs. i dont know what you are using offcourse, but if there cheepies you will go through alot of discs. ditch them and buy good ones.

Like rene said...5-10 minutes with the thin cut off wheels. Cut the weld on the inside edge of each perch, the one that goes around the tube and the two welds on the front and rear ends of the perch. Don't bother with the weld next to the drum. If you cut through the weld just right, you can look into the cut to see how much deeper you need to go. Just try to angle your cut so you aren't cutting to far into the tube. Do the three sides, then give it a couple good whacks on the inside edge with a big ass hammer. Look into the cut and see if you can see a crack starting or evidence that the perch is starting to come up off the tube. If there are cracks or evidence all the way around the inside of the 3 welds you cut, then hammer on it till it pops off. You won't have to deal with the inside perch weld. 5 minutes of cutting and checking, then 8 or 10 bashes with a big ass sledge and the outside weld will break and the perch will pop right off. You'd be surprised how easy it is.
