Replacement manifolds - Brand

damn, epic hangover and still out wrenching. thats devotion.

I guess it beats shooting with an epic hangover:doah:

So are you taking it to my guy? If so make damn sure you mention my name and tell Alan you want that Y pipe tucked up nice and tight to the front of the trans pan but far enough away that you can still remove the pan without having to pull the exhaust. Also I would have them put a flange somewhere after the Y comes together so you can remove only the Y pipe if needed to make things easier in the future should you need the front portion of the exhaust off for some reason. I sure wish you would have come checked out my rig closely before you take your down to get done.

I will definitely talk to him about that. I've been hindered by having to do this all after hours, so will probably only talk to him on the phone and not in person. Plan to get it towed tonight, and chat with him again in the morning. Spoke to him last week, but will revisit everything we talked about.

Thanks for your tips!

OH, if you have it towed tonight and he isn't going to touch it until the morning I could probably go over there and reiterate what you want done and show him my rig just to make sure "we're" on the same page. If that's cool I could snap a pic tonight of my exhaust Y pipe and that way you can take a look to see if you like it.

Actually, that would be awesome. I hate having work done without being able to meet with someone face to face. I'll give you a call later to coordinate, but if you have a chance to swing by there, it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm in agreement on wanting a bolted connection in front of the cat, and good point on addressing the trans pan, and wanting to be able to pull the pan w/o pulling the exhaust. Only other thing i need him to do is install the O2 sensor bung.

I'll give you a call this evening. Thanks scott!

Got the truck towed down there last night. Thanks for the free tow AAA.
Pulled the ECM fuse, and called AAA up.
"I don't know why it won't start, it just keeps cranking" :haha:

Been paying for AAA for almost 10 years, and have used it twice....so don't feel so bad about my little lie to get the towing covered.

Anyways, Scott is going to see his friend at the exhaust shop, and chat about what needs to be done this morning. Thanks Scott, really appreciate your help!

I'll let everyone know how it goes, and post better pics when i pick it up.

Crappy iphone pic of clearance, after i ground my plug down. I used the same 18mmx1.5 oil drain plug that Scott used to plug the o2 port, but i got aggressive, and instead of just taking the head off after tightening it, i cut about 1/2 way through it, removing about 1/2 the plug, and 1/2 the bung. Hopefully it stays tight and doesn't cause me issues. This allowed me to fit these w/o any modification to the frame.

Darren, if you cut the entire flange off the plug (assuming so since you said you also removed about half the bung) then there is nothing from keeping the threaded portion from unthreading either into or out of that header bung. :deal:

Yah, i thought of that. Hopefully, with the weird angles that the plug got ground off at, it won't back out on its own. Guess time will tell. Fortunately, i can always just thread a new plug in there, although if i have issues, i'll have someone weld it closed. Probably wouldn't' kill me to have someone just tack weld the plug to the headers, but we'll see if i have issues.

Not sure what that plug was made of, but hopefully between the dissimilar metals, and the constant expansion/contraction, it will get stuck in there in pretty short order.

I felt the plug when I was at my buddy's shop this morning and i'm pretty sure it is going to come out. On a good note, since you still need to install the graphite flange gaskets that you've got coming that would be the time to remove that header and weld the plug in so you don't have any issues in the future. I caught the guys in time to add that extra flange we were talking about to make the Y pipe removal easier should you need to remove it for whatever reason.

Alan also told me that your CAT is damaged but you decided to run it anyways. Why would you decide to do such a thing? A plugged CAT is not good for perfromance or mileage and could cause a fire and it just sounds crazy to not have him replace it while the rig is up on the lift.

Thanks for stopping by. We'll see how the plug does, i appreciate you input on it.

On the cat, i was startled that it was damaged, and was caught off guard. It was installed less than a year ago, so i'm not sure how it would be damaged already. He mentioned that there was some "junk" in the front of it, so i said vaccuum/clean it out as best he could (as it sounded like debris to me, somehow - gasket parts?) and i'd run it. I don't know, maybe not the best decision. Even if it was running rich, due to the exhaust leak, would it really plug up that fast?

Again, thanks for the help.

I don't know if your engine burns any oil but from the sounds of what he told me I think it is from oil being burned which plugs a CAT pretty quick.

Hm. Well, at least you had me get that handy removeable section of pipe, so i can check it out when i get a chance.

Really though, i don't think i burn ANY oil. Might have burned some when that oil pressure sending unit went out, but i doubt it. Have never had to add between changes.

Picked up the truck tonight. What a difference! its night and day. Mostly i bet it was from getting rid of the epic exhaust leak, but i'm sure the headers did help too.

Thanks for chatting with Alan, Scott, he did a nice job. Hope to get some pics in teh next few days. Really appreciate all teh help, no way i would have gotten the right stuff ordered/installed/hooked up so fast without your help!

I seriously grinned every time i mashed the pedal, its SO much quieter/smoother without that leak, i can't believe i let that thing leak from one place or another for almost 35k. The gaskets i had installed on the manifolds definitely were blown out.

Now i just need to get the nice gaskets installed when i have a chance, and check out the condition of the cat.

Thanks again!

No problem Darren. Out of curiousity what did he end up charging you? Did he give you a rough quote over the phone previously?
