This is a repost from after the server crash.
My 87 K5 had been smelling bad when running, not the rotten egg smell with a clogged cat but just very heavy smell of running rich like a carb truck loading up. Blazer ran fine just smelled rough..

After advice from this site I changed the EGR valve and the vacuum solenoid, also changed plugs since my fat axx was stuck in there, changed the vacuum hoses for both and checked the rest. Ran around town for a while, made sure engine was up to temp, dropped the windows and back glass.
Now the blazer smells like it should. Stopped and let it idle, now all seems normal...

Thanks to the guys that help me...

Went ahead and put a cat back on, PO had removed it..
Blazer has no smell at all now.

Yeah, just glad I can drive without a gas mask now.
As normal fix one thing off to another. Found a manifold bolt in the head stripped. I need to replace the inner fenders, so there should be enough room with the inner fender removed to get at the bolt right. It's the front bolt on cylinder 8

I thought mine ran great too. Changed the EGR valve and the vacuum solenoid for it, and the blazer ran a lot better. And yes the cat made a big difference to the smell.
