Rescued From A Field: 63 Chevy Impala Convertible

So even after you sell it to someone else they keep the same plate? Craziness lol

At the end of May it finally happened, I had been waiting for what felt like a lifetime (patience is not my thing...) to see that little sample I had at home in full scale. When I swung by the shop like usually and walked in to this sight, #HappyGirlMoment!

The boss told my they where painting it the next day, I made him promise to call me when I was done!
20080521 009.jpg20080521 010.jpg20080521 011.jpgAs ya'll can probably guess, I swung by the next day too. I was grinning ear to ear, having my girliest girl moment ever and I might have cried a little, maybe. :haha:
The photos don't make the color justice at all, the last one is closest. But O! M! G!, could anything be more perfect?

Well, that was short lived! A couple days later she looked like this. As it turns out, according to Adam it could in fact be more perfect... and I can't say I disagree either looking at it after I calmed down. Once the color was sprayed he wasn't happy with the bodywork. So he started over, I guess the boss didn't really have a say in this and I didn't pay for a re-spray, Adam knows what his doing.

Let round 2 of bodywork commence! This was May 27th, 2008 and for the next couple months my patience was tested to the max...

I feel like the United States would royally f%#* that up somehow. After you sold your vehicle you’d get the toll bill from the next guy or something

Would royally **** it up? I’ve got a txtag on my Durango that is registered to our account and when I didn’t update the plates on it (from paper plates to real plates) they sent me a bill in the mail even though I’ve got the flipping tag on the windshield that’s registered to my account!! Furthermore, I had to pay that bill separately because their system had automatically generated an account for me and I’ve got to wait for the payment to clear in their system so I can then register the vehicle onto my already existing account with them.

@Chickntrk @centexk5 Hahaha sounds like a nightmare. It’s much easier here.
Our DMW handles everything except signing up for a new insurance.
So when you buy or sell a vehicle both parts sign either the pink slip (ours is blue or yellow) then new owner pays and old owner mails it to the DMW when payment is done, new owner can bring home their new veyright away. If you do it digitally they have an app and it’s done right now.
The person registered to the vehicle is responsible for paying taxes, tickets and so on. As long as you do the change of ownership right it’s very safe.
For vehicles you don’t use for an extended time we can take them “out of trafic” that means you have a different cheaper insurance, like a storage insurance, don’t pay taxes and don’t have to do the inspection. When we do that the DMW notify your insurance company and they automatically switch over to the storage insurance, same when you put it “in traffic” again. All done in the app! ;)

From the end of May until mid August this is where it stood, nothing was done to it. They used my Impala as a storage rack, this thing is valued/insured for $40.000!! That's one expensive storage rack... As you can probably guess I wasn't happy, I would have been fine if it was a month because pretty much all work shuts down in July because of vacation time.
Their excuse as always: We don't have any parts! That exhaust system laying there is the system for the Impala... who knows what else is laying in there. They also had A TON of bodywork to do.

$40.000 Storage Rack... #ExpensiveTaste

Mid August they finally dug her out and got back to work, and boy did they have a lot of bodywork to do! Things were still going a bit slow tho, over the summer they bought a new paint booth and a proper lift/frame straightener/torture device thing that they were busy installing and tuning on.

Lots of sanding... I think this would qualify as a nightmare, right? Does anyone actually enjoy bodywork?

No, no one enjoys body work. Except folks that are into BDSM.....

40k would be the bottom end for a restomod convertible 63 Impala in the states. I doubt you would be able to replace your finished car for 40k.

Progress so far is looking good.
I think your body guy realized what a special project the Impala was, how many people would be inspecting his work. Had to do best work possible, for future possible clients to see.

@TerryD Haha I figured!

@Wes Harden Yeah I know, it's value has gone up in the last 10-15 years. When it's done I'm gonna have a talk with my insurance co.
Thanks! I put my heart and soul in to it.
He absolutely did and he enjoyed it, their main business was collision repair on boring cars so getting to use his knowledge and creativity was fun for him.

To compliment the new fancy engine, a set of shiny Headman headers going to a true dual 2.5" exhaust system. We fired up the engine with just the headers and holy shit it's loud!

Shine bright like... headers!

By November 2008 things started looking up, trunk lid, doors and hood was waiting for final sanding and the rest of the body was almost ready for paint again.
I've always like 60's cars/trucks more than 50's because of the straight sharp lines, it looks fast standing still.

On a not-so-different note, I love these bodylines, they sure don't make 'em like the used to. The attention to details was on point!

Adam was sanding away like his life depended on it!

On December 1st 2008 Adam layed down the final coat of primer and she was ready for paint! She sat for about a month because their main business is collision repair and even tho we get snow every year, people never learn so the winter half of the year they are super busy. Then Christmas and New Years came around and that's holiday time.

Ready for paint!

January 7th, 2009 and she has paint! This time around Adam was happy with the results, she's pretty damn straight. For the record it took another 10, almost 11 years until I got to see the color in natural daylight, of course still very dirty!

So beautiful, this color is insane!

These last 2 photos is a pretty good match to what the color really looks like, in the last you can see the pink and blue metallics.
