the only method I tried so far was a slight incline with the truck in neutral slowly reeling it in - back when I first put it on and after using it a few times - I've got a mess of unevenly spooled cable on my winch now. made me wonder if there was a better way to really ensure a nice even lay of cable on the drum? or just try again with this method with maybe a steeper hill?

Respool the cable after every use. I know it's a PITA, but it's the only way. If I have to use the winch a bunch, like 10 times, I will leave about 50 feet wrapped around the bumper. If it is a one time thing, I will unspool all that I need to and slowly respool it back on. If you leave a rats nest, or dont have it wrapped properly, when you put pressure on it while winching, you are gonna need a new cable because it will start to fray and the cable will develop flat spots.
