Restoration on 89

I think the wholesale warehouse was the first one to tell me it was stretch material. That was were I got the fabric #'s. But the guy that did them knew it too.

I would call SMS and tell them they sold you the wrong stuff and see if they will do anything about it.

Hmmm. Doesn't sound like there is much I can do then. I gave SMS the numbers you gave me and I told them I wanted it in Saddle instead of gray. I guess I could probably call SMS and pursue the issue but then would just say send it back and we will send you the right stuff. Being the upholsterer is almost done with them I can't well ask him to start over either. Maybe I could I argue that he should have explained the seams before getting into the job? Lots of obstacles to clear in this situation to get rid of the seams. Looks like I may just have to live with them.

The #'s I gave you should have been the stretch #'s not the regular#'s

Oh I know I gave them the right numbers and I know you do more than your due dilligence and I trust your information. I even took the guys name at SMS to make sure things went smoothly and I had someone to hold accountable. At first I got the completely wrong fabric so I knew the guy was making it sound much too easy and wasnt really listening to me. "An 89 Chevy Truck? Sure!! Saddle colored? Sure!! I know which one you need." Yea right. I then took a picture of my current seats and sent it to them. Another month and a half then the correct fabric arrived (or so I thought). I matched the colors up and they looked good but I didn't think about the consistency of the fabric beyond the "hand" as it felt the same as factory. Maybe when its all done I will air my issues with SMS and see what they will do. In any case I just can't see wasting all that money to start over. Can you? I am at least going to eat $1200 on the labor.

I wish I had know you did not get the right fabric the 1st time I would have went and got you the #'s for it in saddle color.

Yup it took about 2 months to get my fabric, something to do with they couldn't locate the pattern fabric. But they kept saying they had it.

More Dynamat for Doors and Headliner

I still had some Dynamat left from the floor project so I decided to do the doors, dash, and headliner.

New Rearview Mirror

I figured since everthing was out it would be the perfect time to add an upgraded rearview. This one has a compass, led map lights, and a thermometer. I mounted the thermometer sensor in the front grill.

New Parts

With all that Dynamat it seemed like a good time to upgrade the stereo and speakers. The upgrade in sound quality from factory is minimal but the deck has hands free capabilities that works with my iphone. It goes through the bluetooth but when my phone is in my pocket, people just think its my truck. You should see the look on peoples faces when my truck "rings". :eek1:

I also got a new GM dash and dome light housings from Classic Parts. I also ordered the LMC led domelights and clear covers. Now the led maplights on the rearview match the overhead lighting. It is much brighter than factory!

I got the new dash dyed and the headliner recovered.

Headliner Installed

It took some time and patience to get the headliner buttoned back in with the rearview wiring. It turned out good though I thought.

The seats are done (seams and all) so I will get some pictures taken before I put them back in.

Very nice progress!

How did the dash turn out and the overall dye-process? This was an OEM factory dash correct ($500)? Planning on doing something similar. I tried the dashes direct dash but couldn't get it to work properly so the factory one will be my next move. Already got the new vents from LMC and the dye paint from SEM.

It is the OEM one from Classic Parts and the piece itself was great. I got the dye from LMC and I didn't think it was very good. I let it dry for about a week and it still seemed to chip pretty easily. Luckily it was easy to touch up after it was installed. It's also key to get the clips back in the right place on the new pad or you will spend a great deal of time trying to get the instument panel cover back on.

Front Speakers Installed with Dynamat

You really can't hear the back speakers very well at highway speeds so I Dynamated the dash in an effort to make the smaller speakers sound better at high volume levels.

Nice progress. Looks real good.:waytogo:

Thanks Brian. I am excited to see you get yours finally fired up.

On another note I did get my upholsterer to refund me 400 bucks. SMS was suppose to be sending me the correct stretch fabric but I haven't seen it yet. In the meantime I will just put the seats back in and see if I can live with the seams.

So have you driven it with the doors, ceiling, and interior side panels dynamatted? Mine's fairly loud but there's no real insulation inside other than 1/8" of Rhino Liner. Contemplating doing something to the interior sides of the body and the ceiling like that. Floor will probably get more Rhino Liner.

I just came across this thread....I do have to say...Hell YA, that looks fricking awesome. Nice work

Looks like you had more then just a little dynamat left over.
I need one of those mirrors, where did you get it.

That looks really great man! A+ work. The rearview mirror is a nice touch.:thumb:
