Sit right there and I will tell you about a fateful trip. Started out as a 5 day tour.
Some will be rehash, but I am suposed to send this to my brothers also.
Left at 5:45 am on Monday the 13th, should have been an omen? Was cruising along just fine until Nashville. About 3.5 hours at 65mph. Firs tank of fuel was 6.32mpg. Then went up to 7.something, then 8.something, then 9.something. By this time I was ahving running issues. Got off of the 40fwy because it was dyeing speradically at any speed. Never quit, just acted like it was starving for fuel for just a second.
Drove to a napa and bought a fuel filter, some 3/8 hose and some clams just to have them.
Filled up with gas and hit the freeway. Next exit was a rest stop and that was it. I got progressively worse. Changed the fuel filter on the frame over the exhaust. Yep, burned my arm. First many burns. Had a furniture blanket with me so i did not have to lay on the hot pavement. Old filter had some crud in it. "Good. Found the issue" is what I thought. We all know better now.
Older retired couple was looking at the truck and he asked if I needed help. He handed me tools and stuff until I was done.
Gasoline in the armpit burns. Threw the t-shirt away there.
The next 25 miles were uneventful, except for the occasional car slowing down to take pictures. Including a state trouper. He gave me a thumbs up out the window.
Then BUGH, BUGH, BUGH. Oh crap, back to running bad. Never tried to quit. Would just do this sporadically and keep running. I need to get to Memphis to check in and pick Wade Jr. up at the airport.
I finally made to the venue at 1:30pm Memphis time. I gained an hour in the time change. 8 hours to go 400 miles. Took a long time. But I was there.
he venue sucked. he new company who bought the event from Hot Rod Magazine needs a lot of management. The wait to get into the building was 2.5 hours. I talked to some great people. Guy from Britain, who rented a Hellcat to run the tour, had a semi tire exploded just in front and the next lane over. Took out the windshield, some roof and the rear window. They brought him a scaled down Challenger to drive.
I sarted fading from the heat. The couple in front of me kept asking if I was OK. The guy behind me said they would save my place and to go stand under a tree. So I did. I stood with them occasionally as I felt better. 95* and 4,000,000% humidity was taking its toll on a lot of people. As I was neer the entrance, leaning against a tree, an older lady sits down on the ground in from of me and falls over. I started yelling for help. A staff guy and 2 EMTs rush over to her. The staff guy asked if I was alright. Nope. I am fading. He held me up by the arm as he walked me inside. Took me to a very cool room bigger than my house with nobody in it. Gave me a bottle of water because I had drank both of mine. Finally see my group walk in. Went to walk the line inside with them, and they seemed to be really concerned. I was feeling better now, but did not look it. I ran one set of switchbacks with them just chatting. We get to this sign that said Platinum signups and Gold signups. With no-one in line. What the? Seems I did not have to stand in line because I signed up for the gold. I checked that night. Nowhere did it ever say you could skip that line.
Wade Jr, ubered over to meet me, as I was way behind by now. 80% of the cars were gone. Just too hot to be outside.
Our hotel was 30 miles north because I dislike big cities. The AC died on this portion of the journey.
A bunch of cars were stolen and broke into that night in Memphis, good call on not staying there.
Truck is running like crap and getting worse. I am thinking there may be some stuff is in the carb and causing issues. Ordered a carb kit to be in at 7:30 the next morning across the street.
Pulled the carb that night. Never been so bummed to see a clean carb. I noticed that the needle for the bowl did not come out with the float. The little wire was not there or anywhere in the carb. Maybe that is why it is running out of fuel. Float drops and is not pulling the needle up? But the fuel pump should blow that open, in my thought process. We could not find anything else wrong.
Had a beer with the neighbors and went to bed.
Walked to the parts store at 7:30 am Tuesday morning. Rebuilt the carb anyways. All of the choke stuff, including the butterflies, were remove for expedience. Fugly makes a great bench. We put up the awning for shade. I was still failing. Put the carb on and tried to start it. Ran gas out of the overflow. Back off it came. Forgot to check the float level. Needle and seat must have been a bit different. We pack everything and took off with new found confidence.
Recharged the AC and found my failed crimp. Held for 2 weeks. Not sure what that deal is.
20 miles in, that ended. Started doing the same thing. Pulled off of the 40fwy into a gas station and changed the filter again. Good for about 10 miles. I stink. Wade Jr. stinks. We are going through water.
We exited where the tour turns off and it seems to be fine. Nope. We turn back to the gas station where everyone is sitting.
Electric fuel pump needs to be installed. Mounted outside of the frame and ran hose where it will not be near any real heat. Alligator clips on the battery terminals. Real safe.
6 miles later we passed the Vice grip Garage guys broke down. Then it was our turn 1 mile later. It actually died this time. I am dumfounded at this point. I was under the truck checking to see if anything had come undone. Pulled the filter and nothing ran out of the line. Should be a syphon feed. Dry. Blow into the tank whileJ unior listened. He could here it bubbling.
A group of 6 guys pull over to see what is going on. They were a life saver. Possibly literally. I was not doing well. One of the guys was a recently retired Marine and wrked in their medical division. He told me what it is, but I was out of it. Without asking by me or anything, they brought a chair over. Dumped there cold water on me and one guy stood there for an hour with an umbrella over me. Who does tha. They climbed under the truck and decided that the fuel pump need to be closer to the tank and lower on the frame.
Junior was under there working with these guys. They got their own fuel line. Wiring and tools out to move it. We were probably there for an hour total.
Put everything away and thanked them profusely. They clamed to be having fun.
We made it 12 miles and it died going down the road. Made it into a driveway jst off of the street. Local in a truck hooked a strap to it to ett it into the parking lot. Tractor Supply and Autozone were in that lot. Tractor supply had the new 5 gallon gas can and some gas line. It was closer that autozone. Did I mention it was hot out?
We ran a feed from the 5 gallon can to the fuel filter that is glass now so we can see what is going on. We could see gas moving and it fired up. Put everything away and headed out of the parking lot. Nope. Denied. Would not get out of its own way. We pulled the gas line off of the carb and ran the pump. Definitely not enough gas to run it. Almost nothing.
Walked to Autozone while Junior pulled the pump. Did I mention it was still hot? Walked into the parts store and asked for something to sit on. The counter walked me over to a generator box. Sat for 10 minutes. Bought the only elecric pump they had. Junior and I installed it. We are working much slower as he is feeling it also. The line at the carb shoots a full 3/8" stream of gas a couple of feet. Says it is a 3.5psi, 30GPH pump. Good. Button it all back up and drive around the parking lot. Going down hill it was stumbling a tiny bit off of idle. No big deal, was I got it moving, it was fine.
Stopped at a signle on a slight incline and it barely made the corner to get off of the road. Rolled far enough to park under a nice big shade tree.
We called it at that point. I could not physically work on it anymore. Called the tow truck to get 0.8 miles to the closest motel. Only 3 in town, and it had rooms.
Called Jerry and Roger who had volunteered to come get me wherever I was. They were excited to make the drive. 5 hours. That is after they went and got my trailer. I had set it up with the winch, chains and binders. Because if it is ready, you never need it. I have the winch controller with me.
Tow truck takes us to the hotel that he can not get into. We drop Fugly off up the street pointed up hill. Junior and the tow driver are watching the street as a do a down hill backwards U turn, then swing wide on the wrong side of the street to get up the driveway going the wrong way. Parked it and we are done.
There is a lot I missed in there. But you get the idea.
I am too old for this crap.
