Well I for one enjoyed the story….I can sympathize, dads truck started having fuel issues on the way to Mopar Carlisle last year, he also said “I’m too old for this shit”

I still say keep your head high, you gave a solid effort Wade. No one faults you for stopping, in fact you mentioned laughing a lot with your son, I give you credit for that, many people wouldn't be laughing in that situation.

So you mentioned you tried a separate 5 gallon tank, and a different pump, and it still didn't fix it? Did you have a fuel pressure gauge you could see when this was happening? If you went through the carb, the filter, the pump, and the tank, how could it still be a fuel issue? Or was the new filter plugged up already when you changed the tank and the pump? Did the 5 gallon tank have an air vent?

Is it possible the coil was overheating and going out on you?

I am still suspicious of the carb. Sure looks like a CCC carb that has been "modified". I would try 1 of the 4 others that Wade mentioned having.

i have several similar stories from younger times... would not want to repeat now, or in the future, but it happens.
sounds like you guys had an epic adventure though, and met a lot of good people -restores a little of the faith in humanity that i used to have!

after having 2 vehicles with similar issues in the past, i can empathize chasing these particular symptoms.

-the tundra had the the most stupid fuel pump canister assembly that could ever exist- fuel pump in a plastic coffee can with little flapper valves to allow fuel in. supposed to be new tech to make a sump in the tank obsolete??? MR engineer- you really needed a perfectly flat tank that bad huh?!! - what happens when a bunch of latex paint somehow gets in the tank and cures into flexible leafy material, get sucked into your plastic coffee can, is trapped in there, and when the RPMS are over 2000 it all lifts up and covers the sock/filter on the bottom of the pump pick up????!!! -stays there until the truck has been parked a while and it falls back down to the bottom of the plastic coffee can. repeat- repeat - repeat. do you know how long it took me to figure that out???!!!

-Camaro ended up having a clogged and failing catalytic converter. would run fine when cold - run not fine when the cat heated up... eventually stalled completely and needed a tow. after that, it would start and idle, but bog down and stall if you tried to rev it up or let the clutch out in gear. I now carry hose clamps big enough to go around my exhaust pipes. if I have similar problems and its not fuel related, I will not hesitate to start drilling holes right before the cats... if it gets me home great- if that's not the prob, i can strap a section of a coke can over the pipe and move on to the next thing.

I have had a couple of those over the years. They put in a plastic plug to take up the space where the solenoid is supposed to be. Like they were trying to use one main body casting for everything.
Hopefully I didn't post this earlier.... and forgot. :dunno:

I believe it’s carb as well, honestly I’d have skipped the rebuild kit and bought a Holley at oreilys, they usually stock them.

That plastic well in the tank started with fuel pumps in the tank, gm used them on the 1st tbi.

The dried paint came from a gas pump nozzle. Assholes will roll it and put it in the nozzle, black tape also, them you come along and grab the nozzle fill up be on your marry way then a ways down the road bam poor running issues.

Agree ^ I always tell people that just because all you see on the tell lie vision is bad news, there is still a lot of good in this world.

If it’s any consolation I’ve been catching the fact that cars/trucks are dropping like flies on this PowerTour. You guys weren’t the only one.

Survived to fight another day. You got an extra few days with junior at home. That alone is worth it’s weight in gold. Have fun with him during that time.

Sorry about the trouble you went through.

From experience looking back on those times, those are some of my favorite memories with my dad. At the time they suck. Cuss words flying, busted knuckles, flat backing it getting pissed. But later on they become stories passed down through the generations.

Take it easy I know you’ll get fugly sorted out.

Dang nab it, after meeting with Weird Beard the other day and him saying he had been on the tour before I was looking forward to coming here and reading about what fun you were having. Glad you had the help you needed to rescue it and bring it back home, and have a great time with your son, and stay out of the sun. Still a very cool rig that I am sure you will get fixed right. Take care of your self and enjoy the visit!
