Rich's canoe/ski camping thread

Nice!!! I see a file so i know you did it correct, and not the easy edge way. :thumb: I actually didn't edge or wax this year, gonna wait till before I got to big sky. Skiing the ice hills in Michigan is just gonna wear all the wax off anyways.
 
I use the real file to get through the thick stuff and big gauges then I use one of those little edger things after. I'm no pro tuner though.
 
Hahahaha I would never have skis tuned at rei. I have actually never had a pair of skis tuned by a shop.

I have seen shops grind until there's barely any edge left.

The only reason I have all this stuff is to fix damage. I need to find some clear p-tex for these skis. I just filled those hole with wax so they'll open back up real quick.

I'm also going to be riveting a peeled up base back on to a tip hopefully next week so we'll see how that goes :dunno:

we always tune our own equipment, in fact when I lived in Tahoe we'd call them wax party's.
 
I spent New Years until the 5th skiing at Owl's Head in Canada. We hit up some back country and the mountain has a beautiful lake view.

I'm the one in green hanging on to the tree. That was actually a really steep face, and I don't jump cliffs so the plan was to kinda slide and stop right before the last drop. It had rained a week prior so it was dust on crust conditions.

When it's 20 below zero on the Fahrenheit scale I break out the Carhart. I actually got a little frostnip for the first time since I was a kid. It didn't show up until I shaved.

We had to basically climb down the rocks in the background of that one pic. Somewhere up there is where the pic of me all entangled. There was a "trail" through the back country we were supposed to take, but I have an aversion to following peoples tracks.

It was -14F without the wind and I was fine in my normal cold gear. Just had to layer up. I was 3 layers deep. Base under armor cold gear, sweat pants and sweat shirt, then my pants and jacket.

The only snowboarder in the group. I hope you didn't trip everyone getting off the lift :whistle:

I warm up really fast when I tele so my ski jacket is just a wicked thin shell. I don't have a winter coat so to say. Usually I'm skiing between 20-30 degrees. My next carhart will be one of the new types they make that has the water repellent material on the outside.
 
Lol, my inlaws kept giving me crap out riding the lifts with them. My wife usually snowboards and said she missed it. Skiiing is easier for her so she skied this trip. I don't think I have ever tripped anyone coming off the lift. I have gotten hit by a few not so good skiers poles.
 
Yeah, people who pole off the lift don't know how to ski.

It's into camper right now. Start temp of 43 degrees. I will be checking it before I go to bed and hope to do a longer test this weekend. It just runs on a candle. You can add more candles for warmth but I'm starting with one.

I have no idea if it'll work, but I was bored and looking for heater solutions online. It only cost me like $15. The most expensive thing was the aluminum sheet.
 
So, I let the candle heater burn all night. This morning I woke up to find my camper was now at 34 degrees.

Maybe everyone else who has made one online has never done a scientific test? Maybe my design is flawed?

I notice most people have the pots a little closer to the candle.

I am going to try two candles, and maybe a test ditching my third inner pot.

I based it on what these folks did, and a bunch of other youtube vids.

It looks to me like you're over thinking the heater. The ones I've seen have just 2 flower pots and a candle. I'll see if I can find my link

We use that same heater in a 4x6 ice shanty. It works great. I wouldn't run it on high when you are sleeping but it could help get the temp reasonable
