Please check your route before you leave. Several highways closed going through Colorado as of now

That is going to make for one long boring ride driving to Albuquerque, then north through the bad lands of the Navajo nation.

Right now I 70 is closed, and major traffic infestations on all other East to West routes due to the closure

For all our flat land friends, Independence Pass is a no trailer road

Currently Fire Command is using the roadway as a base station

Estimated containment date is 9/1. This is less than 4% containment now

From Colo Public Radio, there is severe damage to the roadway surface as well as guardrails, and there have also been rock slide events.

At the very least, expect some backups if not a complete reroute around the area. I’ll update this thread if they reopen I-70

Even worse in my book. And I don't get to see the Rockies. I won't get to pass a Prius pulling a grade. Adds 5 hours of windshield time.

Seems like we went I 80 Into WY. past Rawlings and took state hwy that headed down to Rifle....is that affected?

This is the fire that has things all snarled up on I-70 right now, I suspect they will have the Canyon open in the coming days but it will be a much reduced speeds and have significant delays possible as the rock formations are massively unstable now that the vegitation has burned and the rock got super heated.
Things are much better now, however there was a thunderstorm that came through yesterday afternoon and a lighting strike lit a new fire about 2 miles from my house. That fire is now "out" but it burned about 60 acres in 1 1/2hrs and nearly burned at least 5 houses including one of my coworkers house.
So I literally dropped every and ran out of my office at 2:00 this afternoon when I was doing this post originally, because the above mentioned fire flared up and was attempting to head the two miles to my house.

picture of this afternoons flair up from a county road a ways off from my house.
It got knocked down and hopefully will be out soon, they brought in a bigger dozer to make fire line tonight.
AS BB approaches and you need to go through western Colorado please pay attention and also make sure the road your GPS routes you on are viable. As mentioned there are alternate routes that are not for trailers.

As of tonight, Rumor has it I-70 will be open in days not weeks. I think they’re working on the highway now 24-7 as I’ve seen what has to be big work lights reflecting off the smoke in Glenwood Canyon the last few nights

Thanks Brandon

The rumor off CPR is there will be lane closures for repair when it does open, with a fair amount of delay to be expected

In the mean time, the rest of us sit and watch

There’s some road construction on hwy 13 from meeker to rifle but I hear it’s not terrible and at least open right now. We had something like 5 new lightning caused fires in the last 24 hours locally though so crap could get real anytime now. It’s honestly a bit of the Wild West in this area right now. The rains are supposed to make it here next week and that could be good or bad depending on rate of rainfall and where in the fresh burn areas that happens.

Thanks Brandon

they already had it mostly two way in the lower deck so it can’t get much more f’d up.
