replacing the ignition switch and lock cylinder. some how the rod came down. cant seem to get it back in place. any ideas?? im thinking something might have broke. thanks

there should be a cast piece, kinda bar shaped with pawls (teeth) that the switch engages... this slides forward and back in the column.. the bar hooks in the side of that iirc... keep in mind, the "switch" at the bottom that the bar goes into is adjustable, forward and back... for any fine tuning....

OK i guess i just need to spend some time and mess with it a bit.. thanks

This has broken off on mine...how do I get one and how do I replace it? I can't start it right now.

eesh, i really have no idea.. junkyard, LMC, possibly GM..... want ad in our forum here might help...

and if for any reason you can't get it from AZ, PM me, I think I have some extra parts from a column. You can have for shipping ONLY if you can't get it from AZ. If it ends up being some other part, take a pic and I'll see if I have that too.

This is the piece that is broken on his steering column.

Chief Brody, did the previous owner somebody swapped in a tilt column in your blazer? I don't recall the tilt column being an option in 73/75.

THanks! I went and got one....now I don't know how to get to the broken part and get it out. I have a tilt wheel and it is taken apart down to the turn signal enclosure...the part the gear shift is attached to is still on...I don;t know how to get it off.

I wouldn't take it any further apart if you don't have to. If it's sloppy, now would be a good time to disassemble further. If it's just the plastic housing that's in the way, there are a few screws you need to take out to get the housing off. I think there's a few column tear down threads around here somewhere.

Can you try a magnet or pointy object to pull/push it through? I think it's made of aluminum though. errr

THe original sticker says "Comfortilt Steering"

I don't know what holds it in there...

Hmm, interesting.

I don't even know how to explain how to rebuild the column over the internet. It have been over 12 years since I've done what you are about to do.

I am concerned that the two parts don't look exactly alike...notice the "heel" that the original one has next to the teeth and the slim groove in the oval part

The cog that came with the new one has 5 teeth, the original has 6.:

Did you buy the kit which also comes with the mating plastic gear? If so then don't worry about the difference just use ALL of the new parts.

Jeez Louise....I got it done!!! What started out to be a simple ignition switch change turned into ALL DAY.

However, I think that one of the bars on the actuator was already broken and has been broken for some time because I was having trouble with the key turning forward and not wanting to come back.

I got it done and tightened all FOUR star screws so my steering is real tight.

I only had one part left over and I could not figure out where it came from...everything seems to be working ok without it.

I broke the stem off that pokes through the daisy wheel thing you have to compress to put the keeper ring on...it makes the horn work. Whats that plastic piece called? I can't find it anywhere.

OK...I found what it is called...a "cancelling cam".

This piece goes under the one you just replaced.
