I got a quote today from a well known fab shop today for a cage in my jimmy. He told me 500 and it will be well done and nice and tight with the body lines. I know this guy pretty good so i know he isnt tryin to rip me off but does this seem like a good price? I would love to just do it myself but i dont have a bender or skillz good enough for a well built cage. Oh....and just because...:chainsaw::weapon36::weapon39:

Im not sure if you can buy a pre bent kit that cheep so doesnt seem bad to me.:poo::weapon17::weapon14::zombie15::zombie19::weapon36::sign27:

What kind of cage? Also, I might need that buddies info as I've been looking around for a while to find somebody to build one for my 72.

yeah, how much of a cage? 4 point? 8?

heck, i have $1200 in tube alone in mine....

I'd be curious to hear more specific details about what this shop plans to do for $500.

You can barely buy 100' of DOM for that price, let alone bend it into shapes, notch & weld it......oh, and cover the overhead costs and eek out a small profit. :dunno:

:usaflag:

and bigger problem now adays is cheep china metal .

better get more info and specs.

safty is #1 dont skimp.

Around here a good cage that will protect the occupants in a rollover starts at around $1200 unpainted. That is tied into the frame with quality metal and good welds.

It would be HREW and it would be a 4 point. He builds alot of drag car stuff and ive seen ALOT of his work around here. Its good stuff. He doesnt skimp out on anything. I just said i need a basic cage nothin to stop a 200 MPH impact.

that would be a basic bar kit....cage would include downtubes on the A pillar.
But its a start, how much to get the A pillars tied in?

If your satisfied with it go ahead and get it done, frankly i dont get the idea on expensive tubing if you can build it right with an enough quality thing.

A good quote comes to mind "HREW will save you once, DOM will save you many times."

ok then let me ask this, how radical are you off road??

Are you a crazy mofo that always feels the need to climb everything you see? if so yeah get a good cage done.

If someone is building a cage it should never be compromised with "in case I ever roll" because if someone is wanting a cage they are probably pretty sure they might roll at some point and since safety should ALWAYS be the number one concern it is foolish to skimp out on materials to "save a buck" or for whatever other reason.

If anyone in the LA area knows a place to have a cage done (talking front to back) for a good price, let me know. I've only been quoted from one place and they specialize in extreme 4x4 trucks. $1800 for a full cage. Not DOM and not to the frame. ugg

ok so no go on the HREW and a spring the extra $$$ for DOM. I will probably have this guy add alot to it after a while. Oh and im not a real radical wheeler but like to hit some trails and rocks when i can.

Here's how I look at HREW vs DOM...

HREW, I'd use in a truck that was a street driver/wheeler/trail truck/dd. Something that, if it was rolled, would essentially be totalled (from a street driver perspective) and need to be replaced. Either replace the body only along with a new cage or build another truck completely. I would use HREW in my truck because cost vs the one time it will be used is my deciding factor.

DOM, I'd use for two reasons. 1st being a rig that would be more prone to being rolled repetitively. This would be a purpose built rock rig, trailer queen, rock buggy, competition buggy etc. Something you would roll, flip it back over and keep going many times throughout it's life. 2nd would be the Suzuki or Jeep that needs a cage but can't be tied down with 500lbs of tubing and weight savings is real critical.

Cost around $2600 for mine. Ties to the frame at 12 points, goes through the firewall to the front bumper.

HREW and DOM weigh the same. DOM is marginally stronger because of the Drawing Over Mandrel process. DOM actually starts life as HREW.

Sorry, I was under the impression that with HREW at x strength and DOM at the same strength, the DOM had a thinner wall. Which was why race cars used it cause it was lighter? I dunno, I don't build race cars and it's been years since I visited the local chassis shop/car builder.:dunno:

edit:
After reading your post again, your last line, DOM does not start out as HREW this I know. HREW (Hot Rolled Electric Welded) is essentially a flat bar bent into a tube, hence the welded seam. DOM (Drawn Over Mandrel) does not have a seam, it is formed as a tube over a mandrel.
