Roller cam 5.7L build

in the long run of time / tuning / parts / loss of performance over around 5k rpm and just easy of the install and end goal maybe re think the tpi setup .

i like my pro flo 4 as its all adjustable my self on the fly and it works good . also lots of popular intake patterns for the intake to pick from so your not limited to a set of heads .
 
Is the tpi really worth all that??
For the cost of the vortecs you could brand new blueprint or summit aluminum heads and get a new standard intake manifold. By the time you find a tpi tuner and pay to have it tuned you could just do a carb and be money ahead.
Are you referring to the bare aluminum manifolds I posted above? I'm not set on vortec heads, just found the remanufactured set price looked good until I added the cost of the manifold. However, those heads and manifold combo are good for 40 hp over the stock TPI setup according to the manifold manufacturer.

I am set on using fuel injection on this motor. I do not find carburetors reliable enough when I live at sea level but travel through the mountains at 4-5000 ft elevation. TPI is a better system than TBI for overall performance.

Looks like a good option, $1700 from summit for a kit compatible with either standard or vortec heads.
 
and gives you full timming control and 2 fan outputs with full adjustable temps . there is a ton of adjust ability to this system .

not saying its for everyone but dam good system with the options it has .
 
It is possible to use a L's 411 pcm on a SBC....

Vortec lower manifolds come up on eBay from time to time. The old Accel SuperRam tpi setup shows up from time to time. The would be the hot setup for a tpi.

As far as heads, get a set from a PNP off of a old vortex truck. Most yards back home will warranty against cracks....

I have a l31 5.7 vortec crate motor but I can't bring myself to spend that much $$$ just for a lower tpi manifold.
 
Is there a casting number on the marine cam, and also are you interested in keeping it?
 
I took that cam into the machine shop for setup but I have no need for it. I can grab it when I drop off the new cam.
 
Tore down the firebird 305 TPI donor. Turns out it is a roller cam motor. Now I need to figure out if the 14101081 heads are worth using on the 350 with a little rework. They are 1.84 intake, 1.50 exhaust, 58 cc chamber. I want 1.94 intake, 1.50 exhaust, 64 cc chamber.

Fwiw,,, I can't agree...for the cost of putting in 1.94 valves and seats, rocker studs, resurfacing, maybe a little bowl and blending work, you still end up with a basically stock set of 1.94 heads.

Depending on what the machine shop charges would be, I bet you can find a new set of better heads for close to the same money...
 
I'm going to be $1200 minimum into buying new vortec heads and lower intake to match for the TPI. I'm waiting to hear back from my machinist with an estimate for working these heads. I'd it's more than $600 I'd go vortec.

Anyway you won't have to mess with any tuners if you use the Holly stuff. More costly up front. But think about tuning time. Or even Dyno tune time. Money can go quick and you would have a better product in the end.
 
Ended up finding a new head casting on Ebay that matched the boat heads and talking them down to $250 shipped. Dropped the original heads and the new casting off for resurface and 3 angle valve job.

Block had to go .06" over on pistons and will be ready to assemble shortly.
 
Motor is almost done at the machine shop. They ended up going .06 over on the bore, hypereutectic pistons, new Howard's cam (basically RV cam), rebuilt 1.94/1.50 heads once I found a new casting.

Why didn't the machine shop clean all of the block surfaces before they put it together?

now all the cleaning grit and crap is going to fall into the bores and bottom end....:surepal::dunno:

makes me wonder what the internal oil passages etc. look like... basic block cleaning is number one on my list of building engines..:waytogo:
 
I have all my engines squared up and decked if needed. If not decked, the block gets every core plug removed, oil galleys brushed, hot tanked, and all surfaces sanded with emery paper and a sanding block.

The block gets scrubbed two or three times before the first bearing ever gets set in the block.:waytogo:

It's a " to each it's own " kinda thing... I tend to be a little anal about ultra clean assembly.. others, a gasket scrape is "good enough"...
