I want to paint my K5, but I can't afford a professional job being in college. I'm not worried about it looking perfect, just better than mismatched primer. I am also terrible with a spray can, but did exterior painting as a summer job.

I'm set on rolling versus spraying, I was wondering if anyone had any tips. Home Depot said they could mix the orange I want for the exterior for around 25 a gallon. It's exterior house paint. Has anyone used this for their vehicle?

I also want to paint the interior flat black, it is currently light blue. I plan on bed lining the interior eventually.

My dad recently restored a sailboat and has a bunch of marine fiberglass repair materials left over. I know replacement metal is the best, but once again I can't afford it, or have access to a welder. Does anyone have experience with this? My dad says it is a lot stronger than bondo.

the biggest issue with fiberglass is it sticking to metal... are you talking about covering rustholes or somethng?

and um, sure, you can roll and tip it enamel.. someone will be along with a link to the Charger thread.. i do it on boats all the time... you may as well just get rustoleum in a gallon, it's like $50 or something.. and it's at least oil based... i'd be very leary of rolling water based paint like house paint on a vehicle...

I think beast88k5 did his pickup with a rustoleum roll on paint kit. I would definately go that route over using house paint.

How bad is the rust.

The problem with covering rust with anything. Bondo, fiberglass, kitty hair ( just love the name:D) is you must remove ALL of the rust from the metal or it will have a lovely little place to grow and expand without you knowing it and then when it is way bigger then it was at first it will rear its ugly head.

Dont use house paint. Go for the rustoleum at bare minimum. They say the proffesional line is a harder paint and dries faster than the regular stuff.

I'm going rustoleum, yall convinced me. I'm going to paint the interior flat black and fix rust issues before I paint.

You can, but it would be easier to buy a harbor freight gun, and spray the rustolium on. Just thin it out before you spray it.

Look into Valspar farm and implement paint from tractor supply. Its the same thing as rustoleoum, BUT........ it has a compatible hardner thatll help keep it looking good. The rustoleoum doesnt have a hardner you can add. And no. You cannot add the valspar enamel hardner to the rustoleoum. It doesnt work for some reason

1:1 oil based enamel/mineral spirits. Add recommended dosage of enamel hardner
Mix to consistency of milk
Apply even, thin coats (5)
Wetsand with 1500
Polish with meguars

Once you add the hardner, the paint WILL DRY. theres NOTHING you can do to stop it. So do a little at a time. The oil enamel flows out really well when thinned properly.

After reading about rolling on Rustoleum I gave it a go. I used foam rollers and did my hood with white rustoleum straight from the can. I took my time and laid down a nice coat on the entire hood, stood back for a good look and FREAKED OUT!!! There were lines and ridges all over!!! I got disgusted and went in the house intending to start grinding it back down to metal in the morning. Next morning I fired up the coffee pot and walked out to get set up for a long aggravating day of wire wheeling....what I saw stopped me dead in my tracks...the paint had laid down across the hood beautifully!!! All the ridges were gone and it was a perfect sheet of white enamel with some cool orange peel texture to it!!! Needless to say I did the rest of the 'burban with a smile for everyone who thought I was nuts for rolling paint on my beast.

yup, that's why ya throw a splash of thinner in....

I did a boot stripe on a 40' sportfish a couple weeks ago, roll/tip with an air dried enamel.. took a few coats and some sanding, but it looked like it was sprayed...

Just 2:1 paint:thinner eliminates vitrtually all of the OP. RUSTO-LEUM flows out pretty darn nice!

I don't mind the orange peel,it kinda makes it look like skin on a living machine YES I watch too much scifi:rolleyes:

Honestly..... i like the orange peel (for now) too. My k5 isnt meant to drop any jaws in tye parkig lot, just turn a few heads on the road. Like my grandfather always told my dad, "if they see that, theyre lookin' too damn close anyhow" (STRONG german/texan dialect)

I used 600gr wet sanding to knock some of the highspots down, and just get it all level. Quick hand buff with sone meguars, and youre sure to have a semi-permanent finish thats not gonna impress anyone except yourself!

Kaiser I like your grandfather:waytogo: Gotta respect the German engineer/American attitude combo:bow:

I've been trying to find a polyurethane paint I can mix with Herculiner to make a gray-to-black fade. I read about some marine topside paint that some guys have used after the Rustoleum roll ons they've done.
