Hey gang,
In no-way am I finished with this project, but i figure i would show the progress of installing a used roof console from an 89 GMC Suburban to my 91 Suburban. I have not really found any detailed how to's or pictures even, so my goal is to remedy that with this posting.

I went to the junk yard and pulled the unit with the bracket. the console is only connected with 4 bolts,Now the bracket was quite a bit tougher to get out,as it was pop riveted on to the roof supports. I used a pry bar and brute force to pop them loose. some bending occurred at the rivet spots but i just hammered the bends back out, it does not need to be pretty, it is covered by the liner and the console itself.

Here are some shots of the roof minus the liner and framing. as you can see all the Holes to mount the bracket are already there, just need to re-rivet or bolt in to those holes. Also ou can see a bracket used for the dome\Map lights. I think i will move that back so as I can mount a Flip down screen. i will either do that or just mount it to the console itself, i still have not decided.

Below are a few pictures of the console being stripped for cleaning, i will be adding LED replacement bulbs to this as part of my Modernization of this truck.

That's crazy. Don't touch it, could have been in someone's poopshoot!

So, all that hols the console up is that bar? That's all you need to add one?

So, how much you want for that blue container? Ha,ha.

munepit,
Ohh no, that is the bracket that held up the old map light. I will be taking that off and probably swinging it farther back (from brace 1to2 to 2 to 3) so I can mount a Fold down monitor or another roof mounted item. the bracket for the console is a very large stamped piece of steel. which connects to the front just above the windshield then on the two roof supports heading to the back.

Gotcha! Thats for posting this. It might be an option in the future. I see these all the time at the junk yard! Keep posting!!

So I'm not the only one....I found a baggie of meth under the carpet under my passenger seat....Threw it away with no finger prints. At least clean up your contraband before you sell.

LOL! yeah, this went straight in the trash bin! It was pretty shocking to find but not surprising heheh. I imagine Carlos asking Juan why he only had 99 caps and not the 100 and then taken out to the desert and shot when the 100th caplet never showed up! Then his Suburban ends up in my junk yard! Hahahah!

Update!

I have mounted the bracket, I could not find screws the correct diameter of the mounting holes so i got the closest i could find and i got the idea to use common nylon wall anchors. i had to cut them down a bit to fit in to the roof brackets, but it worked like a charm, filled the gap nicely! i also used some washers with the machine screws to cover the gap in the bracket hole if that makes any sense. after all was screwed in, i test fit the bracket and console and i think it looks fantastic!!!! i will be cutting the liner and completing installation tomorrow. i will also get better pictures of the mount and the procedures i used in the daylight. for now here is the test fit. the festoon bulbs are dead but all 4 map lights are working fine, especially after a good cleaning.

update #2

With the wife's Help I put the Roof liner back up and did a "Final" install of the roof console. I still have Visors, and trim to put back up as well as "Oh $#!t" handles. I also did a quick and dirty test fit of the flip down screen i plan to use. What do you think? I Freaking LOVE the look of this!! can't wait for it to be 100% finished.

Are you going to change the color of the console? Does the monitor block the rear view mirror?

I have one of these consoles in my K5 (shortened to fit) and I always wondered what was "supposed" to hold them up.

well, I had planned to fusion paint the gray part to match the roof and interior, but I have the same gray color on accents on the interior, so i figured i would just leave it gray. Only painting I will end up doing any time soon is to the scalloped lights toward the back.

and when flipped down, it absolutely covers the rear view. Flipped up, it does not.

finally up and bolted in! All the trim and visors etc are back up! i think it turned out great!!!!

what do you guys think? I will be adding that Monitor as soon as I get a DVD\multi media head unit!

I like it! :waytogo:

I just picked up one of those roof console's at the local yard for my suburban a few weeks ago so this thread is a life saver on how to mount it up. Anything I need to look out for as to mounting or cutting the headliner so it looks factory?

Thanks for the write-up!

i would recommend proper screws and washers for the mounting, I had a hard time with that, so I improvised haha! as for cutting the liner, i was going to just cut the same width as the bracket, but the wife (in her infinite wisdom) suggested i just cut the liner where the mounting holes for the console itself were(two bracket mounts in the very front 2 screw mounts in the middle, and two toward the back, and a notch to get the wiring out to the console.......other than that a good cleaning with soap and water and a liberal coating of armor-all or plastic restore.... you should be good to go. you may want to add LED replacement bulbs just for a cleaner white light, i will do this in the near future.
