Alright I've spent all morning and most of the afternoon looking through page after page on roof racks. I've found some ideas that I like and some that just leave me scratching my head. I can't decide what approach would work best for what I want and what I'm going to use it for. I know I want to put lights on it, handy man jack, shovels ect., carry my spare, and be able to put camping gear and things like that on it. I like round tubing more than square but I don't know what gauge to use. I also can't decide if I want to just run bars across for the floor or use expanded sheet metal with some supports. I also can't decide how wide I want it. What do you guys think would be best? I've hit a wall.

My 86 Burb. I'm not worried about how easy it comes off, because it pry wont come off very often if ever. I also have a sun roof and don't really want the rack to come forward of it.

Well, 60" would put it right at the width of your drip rails. I would suggest anywhere between 55" and 60" depending on how much overhang you want on each side. Mock up a cardboard model and set it on top.

I'd make it a tad narrower and build handrails and tie down points. Also put the shovel/jack brackets on the sides. Mock it up with cardboard (or whatever you have) and place the shovel/jack and keep them inside the gutter lines. Then if you have to get to them in a hurry, you arent moving cargo or getting up on the roof to undo the brackets. And by keeping them inside the gutters, you wont have to worry as much about snags.

As far as round or square tube, I cant give ya any educated or experienced adviced. Seems 50/50 for the few I've seen.

rethink putting the spare up there unless your running like 28 inch tall tires. Anything bigger then that is going to be a pain to get up there.

These are the dimensions of my Con Ferr rack - 60" wide x 83 1/4" long x 6 1/4" high. That won't interfere with your sunroof and works real well for me.
X 2 on the spare tire up top, I tried it with a 38" tire and its a pita.

I'm running 35x12.5 and I don't think it will go into the stock location, and I don't want it bouncing around in the back or have it taking up room inside. That's why I would like to put it on the roof rack. Yeah its kinda heavy, but one guy can put it up on the roof and take it down by himself without much effort or breaking anything.

I myself am going to take a ladder rack from a pickup, cut the legs off and make my own mounts, about 4-5 per side. It's round tubing, sturdy, put some extra tubing across from side to side and be able to carry just about anything. And it's cheap

a 315/75/r16 bfg at will fit in the wheel well on my 89 burb. i have been contemplating a roof rack made of 1.5" dom that goes past drip rails and connects to a roll cage for sliding against rocks. the handyman and the shovel are going inside the burb, i don't like things disappearing and prefer the stealth mode. and the offroad lights would be on a removable bar that tilts the lights back down flat.

Here is my rack. It's basically round tubing with a expanded metal floor. Sorry for the crappy picture, but it's all I have right now.

Hmm it worked for me. They are really hard to see until you click on them. They are right under the titles: Top View, Side View, Front/Rear View.

Hey Muddy, hows that winch work for ya? I know the 8274's were only rated for 8k but have heard of alot of folks using the fast line speed to thier advantage and double-lining the cable for extra pull.

I won't buy any other winch. It will pull way more than 8k single line pull. Its a very underrated winch. I've used the piss out of this one for years and have never had any issues what so ever. Even pulled a semi out of a deep ditch with it on a single line pull :eek1:

Awesome! I'll have to wait till next year to get one. Found alot of used ones for decent prices, and even some new ones for a smidge over $1k. Funny thing is, Warn sells them for more than most of the Warn dealers I've come across so far:confused:

Anyways, I'm done hijacking the thread.

hey, jeff, got any pics of how you attached the rack to the roof?

Jason, wish I did but a lot of the old burb pics were on my old hard drive that crashed and was unrecoverable :doah: But all I did with mine was hard mounted it with IIRC 4 posts per side and 2 bolts through the roof per posts. Used a homeade rubber gasket under all the mounting feet. Never did leak once in the time that I owned it.
