rookie qestion about oil........

[ QUOTE ]
I'd like to see a scientific study comparing uber synthetic $5/qt oil changed every 3000 miles vs the cheapest ghetto total crap on-sale for $0.39/qt oil changed every 1500. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the cheap stuff worked just as well or even better.

Not really what you asked for, but heres a link to a good read on comparing some of the top brand on the shelves...

There was a study done on oils and a summary was printed in the Mechanical Engineering journal about a year ago, maybe two.

It turned out all conventionals had the same properties as far as formulation, friction and I think high temperature break down. Everything changed in the land of synthetics though. I think Mobil 1 ended up being the best synthetic.

The study was done by a university, I think the univeristy of Texas mabey. I save all my issues so I'll dig it up tonight when I get home and post up.

Synthetics kick ass, no doubt. I saw an oil study once that showed around 3000 mi. the filter started to by-pass then with the oil left in and the filter changed no breakdown was noted with the oil till about 8000 mi. Mobile did the test I think. Conventional oil wasn't even close. As far as the conventional oil don't know if your study showed Chevron oils but they ARE the best formulated....
