Rubicon July 2023

I'm possibly in on this. It's been awhile since I ran the con. If any SLC guys go I'll jump in that convoy seeing I'm right on 80.

What direction are you looking to run it? You planning a out and back or run threw and take blacktop back to the tow rigs?

I'll want to run it the traditional route; don't remember what that is right now. I don't have a tow rig, so I'll just be running straight thru. I'm pretty sure we'll end up in a rental house near Lake Tahoe to base out of.

Traditional rout is starting in at loon lake and out Tahoma/tahoe side. That's the way I always ran it. Truck will be street legal just towing to save wear and tear. 40s are not cheap enough to wear out on I80

how far is the highway trip back?

If you unload in loonlake exit tahoma it's about 85miles back to loon. I personally would unload in Tahoe and find a place to stash the trucks and trailers and drive the 60 or so miles to loon lake and exit tahoma then drive the 25miles back to the tow rigs.

I usually start at Loon Lake on day 1, wheel to and camp at Buck Island Lake...day 2, I run to the Rubicon Springs and turn around and head back to Buck Island Lake where my camp site is at...day 3 I then wheel back to Loon Lake to the tow rig. I have not driven all the way through and back around yet.

I use to do the same myself but that a tall task for those who have never ran it. Depending on group size I would think buck would be a good first day. The harder part of the trail is from buck and out to top of Cadillac. I'm not the one doing the scheduling on this trip so I'm just along for the ride. I just feel with some first timers may be best to let them enjoy the time going threw and not be pushed. Buck is always a good stopping point to do a nut and bolt check and rest up. But who knows we may all just go threw with no problems and can make the springs before dark. I'd just hate to see guys make a 10 to 11hr drive to not see the trail during the day.

I just re read what you wrote. Not sure why I thought you bomb to the springs the first day and then back to buck.

The only thing I would add on day 2 is run up Cadillac to observation and then turn around and head back to Buck. Then you can say you did the trail cause the last 10 ish miles of river rock to tahoma is miserable.

Camped at Loon with tow rig. Drove out to Tahoe day 2, found Denny’s and hotel. Morning’s highway drive back to Loon was very nice. Loaded and back home. If I did it again, I would do 3 days on the Rubicon, maybe paddle board the lake or more turning around. That or 2 days for Rubi and hit Fordyce after.

As much as I’d like to make it, if things go well enough, I’ll be in Italy thinking about ya’ll. :D

So, it's been a dream of mine to run this trail since I was a kid in the 80's.
I grew up reading 4wheel and OffRoad and Four Wheeler and I remember when one of them covered sending a K5 on 35's and stock axles on through. Which was quite the feat for the time. Then the next year they sent a K30 with a big block through.
Reminiscing aside, those in the know school me on what it takes to run this trail. My long bed is on tons and is locked and does awesome in Moab, and I know I would need sliders at least. Of course I would want to drive my K10 there and back.
Although I watched that dirt every day where Dave ran that stock K20 and dented the crap out of it.
