Rubicon July 2023

If the trail is the only goal 3 days might be long. If the overall experience camping friends and being in beautiful outdoors in gold country, is the goal I say 3 days is bare minimum

I think I phrased that poorly. I think what they meant is that we could get done way quicker than that if we wanted.

ah gotchya and yes it can be done quicker. Lot's of people run day trips to buck and back out, some will run the whole trail but they're usually in buggies.

The trail review I was reading recently said 5 to 15 hours moving time. That's a huge spread.

the whole trail in 5 hours is no traffic in a buggy, a very well sorted buggy :saweet:

On Tuesday Zak and I ran from buck to loon staging area and back to buck in under 4 hours. That was in his jeep (basically a buggy) and we stopped at cell phone tree twice as well.

When we ran it, 8 hours of trail time. Did not include dragging one jeep out to the trail head because he did not wheel it before he went. Too many upgrades right before.

another question for you guys that just ran it. Did you bring, or need extra fuel? I've got a 30gal tank. Wondering how much extra fuel I'll need, if any.

you should be fine with a full tank and carry 5 gallons for piece of mind. The gas stations are distance from both trailheads.

Exactly what Wes said. The trail can be done in one really long day, but where's the fun in that? It's a beautiful trail with lakes and springs along the way. You guys are traveling pretty far to get here. There's no need to rush it. It's nice to stop and swim at Buck Island, go for hikes, etc. We also need to consider the likelihood of mechanical failures.

The trail is only 17 miles long. I ran it in my K5 with plenty of fuel to spare. I don't plan on carrying extra fuel.
cool. I pretty much assumed I'd be fine, but it never hurts to ask questions about a trail I've never been on before.

All good points, and exactly why we are planning 3 days. However, it's good peace of mind to know that if we NEED to get out, we could just put the hours in and get to the end of the trail relatively quickly.

I’m going except I’m heading in on the 19th.
So if the SHTF I can be on call backup on the way in as you guys are heading out.
I think the group I’m going with plans to run it backwards, starting on the Tahoe side.
