Rubicon Trail 2013 (Post 7: Trail report + Pics!)

Nice! :) Have a good time! I'm sure Old Sluice will be available to you, as most of the big groups bypass it. Old Sluice looks nasty, but from what I've seen (I haven't done it) there's really only one really challenging obstacle in there - a real tight squeeze and some big boulders.

How old is that damn, and how did they get the concrete there?

Martin

I don't know how old the dam is, but I suspect they flew in the materials and equipment with a helicopter. I wish I had gotten some pictures of Rubicon Springs, but it's a well developed area with a cabin, generator, running water, amphitheater, etc. They have a helipad there, and fly all of their supplies in/out. Last year I saw some pretty heavy machinery on the trail, and I suspect they dropped it in via helicopter. This year the only heavy machinery I saw was a small tractor.

That's just crazy to me. There is no such thing as public land really, and definitely no undeveloped land around here. Martin

Yes, that's quite different from here. In NV, almost 90% of the land is public. And NV is a BIG state. Most is BLM land, but a lot is also National Forest. Not sure what the statistics are on CA, which is where the Rubicon is located. But I know they have a lot of National Forest too. I saw a map once of the amount of public land in each state, and there was little to nothing east of the Rockies - but mostly public land west of them.

It is all farmable here, that or it can used for pasture. Not many rocks in Nebraska, at least not in the Eastern part of the state. Martin

Not sure if everyone knows this, but the Springs is actually private land. So it's basically the most bitchin getaway cabin :D.

Very cool. I would luv to make it out there. Dont ever come to florida, you'd be bored to death within 10 min. ya'll have the nicest trails out west.

I know it wouldn't be as bad ass as driving your own rigs out here, but if folks wanted to plan a Rubicon ride-along trip to the West, I would enjoy that!

Great pics once again as usual. Makes me feel like I went to the 'Con without leaving my desk at work. :thumb:

About the transmission mount that broke - it looked pretty new in the pic. Was it rubber or poly? I'm just wondering because I've always heard that you need to make sure the bolts in the rubber mounts are as tight as possible, but you need to keep the bolts not super tight if you're running poly mounts or risk them breaking. Also it seems to me that the earlier style (flat) crossmember is less susceptible to having the mounts break with its two seperate mounts vs. the newer crossmember's single mount with two bolts for some reason.

Anyway I was just curious. In the meantime, I'll just continue to look at your pics and wish I was there instead of here. :sign20:

I can't say how old the trans mount was, as I've had the truck only for about 15000 miles. It had a made in Thailand sticker on it, if that helps determine whether or not it was stock. It was rubber, and I replaced it with rubber.

Glad you liked the pics!

Well I would say to tighten the bolts real good and keep them tight. I replaced mine with poly because the rubber was wasted and I personally believe that leaking oil and trans fluid will cause the rubber mount to get soaked and soften up over time. I've since fixed my leaky seal but I'm still glad I used poly just because I think it will last longer. However, it does seem like I can feel the drivetrain moving around a little more with the poly mounts when I get on and off the gas. I've heard not to use poly trans mounts with rubber engince mounts and vice versa because of that very reason. Time will tell.

I went with rubber because it's cheap. My drive train will probably change in the next year or so, and so I didn't want to put money into new motor mounts to go along with the trans mount. ;) I was thinking about getting longer bolts for the trans mount, and add in stover nuts to the them as they stick out of the mountain ears on the trans to make sure they stay tight, but to now that locktite should work fine. :) LSO, I don't have any leaks, so that shouldnt be an issue.
