anybody run 2 tranny coolers? im bringing the truck down to the beach for a week and its going to be super hot, like 100* and 250 mile drive to get there. ive got the biggest tranny cooler the auto parts stores carry, but i just dont like that its going to be so hot outside as well. what do you guys think? its the weak 700r4 with big tires. i wont be using overdrive either

got road assistance?

Really if you have a 18000+ cooler in front of the radiator, that will provide plenty of cooling for the fluid.
You could always encapsulate it in a Dry Ice box though.

The expectancy that the rest of the tranny is up to the task "in my opinion" is a crap shoot.

ive recently made several 100+ mile trips and everything was fine, im just a little concerned because its going to be so hot outside. i think we are planning to leave early in the morning so hopefully we'll get there before the temps go through the roof

I run two stacked plate type coolers on the crew cab in series.

The cheapest way out, is a transmission temp gauge.
It won't stop the overheating if it occurs, but it will warn you before it gets too high, so you could stop and run the engine at fast idle in park until it cools down.

Then, after this week, with the high temps, if it does not overheat, you can save your money from buying another cooler.
If it does, then not only will you know that its needed for sure, but you can watch to see if it did the trick afterward.

another possible solution is to run a oil filter type filter on your trans, increasing the amount of fluid will allow it to run cooler. Plus you will be getting better filtration.

Plenty of guys run the stock integrated tranny cooler in the rad in series with an additional external cooler. I would recommend just getting yourself a bigger cooler though and moving your current one over to your power steering.

I would get a temp gauge for sure, but if just driving in 3rd and the thing overheats I would guess theres other issues as well.

However a bigger trans cooler is never a bad idea.

Here is another trick.
My old man had a Dodge motor home years ago. It had a 727 Torqueflight in it. The tranny pan was about twice as deep as a regular pan, so there was more fluid capacity. However the neat part of it was it had about 6 tubes running through the pan. I would say they were 1/2" diameter. So it let air flow trough the tubes to help dissipate heat. I thought it was a pretty simple ideal, that surly couldn't hurt.

What that airtube going to your trans pan?

O that my ram air transmission!'

:haha:

thanks for the input guys. i'm running the complete PSC hydro-assist setup with cooler already ;) all my fluids in the truck have a cooler, except brake fluid.

i'll see if i can locate a trans temp gauge locally. could i use a mechanical engine temp gauge and put it in the pan?

Yep. Just take the probe down to the store and get an aluminum spark plug non fowler thats the same thread as the probe and get it tig'd into the pan.

If its steel pan then thats even easier.
