I bought the wire and the recepticle and box...and a breaker..

I've never been in a Square D box before but it sounds simple enough...anybody here electrically inclined that can give me pointers? :dunno:

I bought the 4 wire 10/3 30AMP wire

I understand that the two positive wires connect to the breaker...

I also have a Neutral wire and a Ground wire...NOT sure which terminal on the breaker panel to attach those too...

Step 1: Go to www.yellowpages.com

Step 2: Search for electricians...

Step 3: Call one with good reviews...

Step 4: Stand back and watch a professional not burn your house down. :)

on your box the ground and neutral share the same ground, just connect the white and bare wire to the same ground bar. Be careful not not touch the hot poles. If you are not comfortable wit electricity then hire a pro.

Here is my box that I wired when I built my house (4 wire), on the far left and far right you will see the ground poles(copper wires) that are separate from the neutral bars(white wires). Electricity is fun once you know you stuff. I am no expert, but I know alot.

That's what I was looking for...I thought maybe there was a seperate neutral and ground but that works

My box doesn't have the ground bars off by themselves...

Doesn't matter, just hook up your wires where the white & bare copper wires are.
...on the top right of your pictures.

You good with this all, Chief?

Yes...I think I have it.

I have 30 Amp wire which is overkill but I may upgrade the motor one day to a 7.5 horse
The compressor will draw about 15 Amps
I have a 20 Amp breaker

Red and Black are Positive
White is Neutral
Green is ground

I think I am good to go

What gauge wire are you running off of the panel?

Is your breaker a double pole?

Is the garage connected to the house where the panel is or will you need to run underground?

10 gauge wire

Breaker is a double pole

garage is connected to the house, but I bought outside wire for added safety

i always like to run BX cable for compressors, garage stuff...

Price was a factor...have you bought wire lately :eek1::eek1::eek1:

the BX 10/3 would have easily been well over $3.00 /ft...and everybody likes to sell pre-cut lengths of 25, 50, 100, 250...etc...that's a problem when you need 30 feet and don't want to pay for 50.

I am expecting the sandblaster guy to call with my tailgate...I'm not skimping...I'm just trying to keep things moving...having the power outlet already installed will be a lot nicer when I finally go get a compressor...that outside wire will do fine inside...I am making it nice and clean to a flush mounted wall outlet...I want to be able to unplug it if I want to, instead of wire nutting it to the compressor.

mines hardwired, i just shut my breaker off when not in use... my homo depot sells bx by the foot off the drum... iirc, the 10' piece i got was under $20...

My homo depot didn't have the BX on a reel...and I paid $70 for 30 feet of Romex...

When I run out to my unattached garage, I'm going to go with the 8 or 10 gauge exterior stuff and bury it 6 feet underground. I'm also going to go with a 40 double pole for the garage, too.

Essentially, I'm viewing it like a hot tub install as the wiring goes...but if you're inside, that's easier, too.

Are you going to create a second panel in the garage area, or just run to a dedicated outlet? It might be worth a second panel to be able to do that shutoff there like Ryoken said rather than over and over at the main.

Nah...just running straight from the existing panel to a wall socket...I probably would do a sub panel if I was turning my garage into a machine shop, but for now the only plan is to put a compressor in there.

Roger. You and Ry are super competent, so I just assumed you might want to run a welder in there, etc.

just be forewarned there Chiefy..... 220 plugs/receptacles are not cheap these days.. plan on $40 for a pair... i do it with my welder, 25' 6/3 extension cord plugged into the dryer outlet...
