Ok so my dad has an old engine out of his 79 blazer that i think i am going to rebuild. Me and my friend have already tore it down and i am eventually going to be taking it to the machine shop. It is a reman. block (ie goodwrench or something) and i took the mic to the cylinders and if i did it correctly i got 4.050 right on the dot.
From my research i found stock bore is 4.000 so my ?s are is this still a good block to be rebuilt? It doesnt have any scoring in the cylinders that i noticed. It is just polished and needs honed out. Am i going to be running into problems or am i just worring about somethng i shouldnt be worried about?
Thanks Patrick

depends on what you are going to do with it, .06 is usually the limit before you have to have it sonic checked. but i have built 388s (stroked and bored 350s) at .06 over bore and made 400hp/450tq on the dyno, the guys i built those engines for have never had a complaint. but i did have the blockes checked for cracks and sonic'd before using them.

Well the main reason i am moving forward on this block is because Friday i am going to look at a Camaro i might be buying:wink1: It will just be a DD and play toy. I would like it to be dependable with performance of course:rolleyes: Its a 5speed as well.
I am gonna get it cleand for $55 i think the guy said something about checking for cracks ~40iirc and honed $12 per cylinder and check line bore.
So to answer you question fully without jabberin is i want dependablity/performance/and heck it might eventually become a stroker;)

as long as the block is in good shape it should be fine for 350-400hp with 2 bolt mains and 400+hp with 4 bolt mains. to get heavy into the 500s youll need a stroker, alum heads, fordged rotating assembly, etc etc in other words $7,000+ haha but you can built a nice street performer for pretty cheap.

Its a 2bolt and if i was to go into some serious mods(alum heads, stroker, ect) i would get a 4bolt. Im just looking for a little street performer that i can hopefully be drivin before i graduate this comin school year:haha:
As of now im lookin to hopefully get 2.02 heads, roller tip rockers, good intake, maybe(most likely) headers, good carb, and depending on price i might upgrade the clutch on the camaro(if i buy it)

Well if i had the money i would but im broke :haha: building this engine alone will be a SLOW process due to limited funds:rolleyes:

4 bolt mains arent necessary on an NA motor until your hittin 5s and some people even say high 500s.

If I was doing budget I'd go with some vortec heads to save and spend the bling head coin else where on a roller valvetrain that will give you a broader power range than a traditional flat tappet motor.

Ya i was thinkin about vortec but there arent much for sale here locally on CL and junk yards are slim to none around here(rust central so off to the choppers they go)

You could do the spayed caps on the 2bolt block and make it stronger than a 4bolt block.

Well then it looks like im going to keep my eyes out for a set of vortec heads. :D Im going Friday to look at this Camaro. Regardless of if i buy it or not i want to build this 350 block(or another one bronc;)) But i have really been interested in this Camaro. Thanks for the comments so far guys! If ya have anyother suggestions go ahead and say em.

For whatever reason 4 bolt mains get alot of attention, My understanding is that there is little to not real strength improvement until you go to the splayed main caps with the angled outer bolts.

I have also heard to avoid used vortec heads because the lightweight castings like to crack. besides the cost new is very reasonable or for a few hundred more than that you have dozens of other options.

4 bolts vs 2 bolts is more a function of how much rpm you want to turn.

I have built a couple 2 bolt engines that were shifted under 5k rpm, they lived pretty long lives but hard ones both were in dd drag cars. Driven every day raced nearly every weekend.

Most of your power is going to be in the heads. Vortecs are a good way to start.

Start looking at your engine as a system. Include everything that makes the engine go. No matter how hot an engine you build if you miss one thing in the overall system you won't be realizing its performance potential

When I was considering doing an s10 race truck I did alot of 4 bolt vs 2 bolt reading. The generally knowledge I picked up was unless you were making ridiculous numbers OR going with forced induction dont hold your breath for a 4 bolt block.

That being said I've never heard of vortec heads having weak castings. I do know that a built set will run you around $600-800 which is the same realm as a set of cast world product heads or somethin similar. Aluminum will start at like $1200 for brodixs and go up.

I plan to make over 400hp with my 2bolt 350 I have ready to go in, am I worried about it? Not one bit. Looking back would I have sprung for the splayed main caps while the block was in the machine shop, probably but just for bling and piece of mind.

Search vortec heads on summit and jegs and you will find some very good deals...
