Sand blasting media Q/...EZ off-oven cleaner Q...

Re: Sand blasting media Q/...

Okay, I will make sure I get it all off, can I just use water to wash it off, or do Ineed some kind of solvent?

Re: Sand blasting media Q/...

Actually EZ-off oven cleaner works GREAT on aluminum, you just need to make sure you don't leave it on there for a long time and that you wash it all off.

Re: Sand blasting media Q/...

ookay thanks guys...
now thats cleaned up, where can I find a resperator online made for sandblasting?

Re: Sand blasting media Q/...

Actually it's silica sand and that stuff is abrasive as hell. It's what we use to sandblast the inscriptions into granite headstones. Be sure to tape off any machines surfaces or you will need them remilled when you finish. Any decorative stone and sand company should sell sand. #1 dry is what I use. Dust is indeed a big concern as it can cause silicosis which is bleeding of the lungs. I use a dustfoe mask which is OSHA approved and costs around $30. You can order one and filters from BIcknell mfg.out of elberton GA 1-800-241-7105. Just ask for the latest version of the dustfoe mask. You may want to buy extra filters too. As for a face shield I use a cheapo welding mask with clear glass. When the glass frosts over just cut a few squares of single strength glass and replace it.

I use silica sand for blasting any heavy steel and it is reusable to a point. Eventually you will need to get new. Do not blast thin metal like body panels with silica. The heat generated at the blast point will warp the panel. Look into walnut shells, corncob, or poly..and glass bead is best for blasting aluminum. Just make sure the case is sealed and plug the vent hole and it should be fine.

Okay thanks, I will look into those masks when I get home. Thanks /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Ditto on the 30 mesh. It was cheap and worked well. I bought a Sears Craftsman sandblaster for about $60. Then I stapled 3 mil plastic sheets up in the garage to create a booth. I bought a cheap $15 fan and rolled up some cardboard to make a tunnel. I used the tunnel and fan to vent the booth. I just bought a couple of pairs of cheap safety goggles, which only lasted for a while before the lens got hashed. I probably should've used a good respirator, but I just used a good quality 3M filter mask.

I blasted my frame before POR-15'ing it and was happy with the results. I then swept up all the sand, and put it into a huge roller garbage can which filled it up half way. Since then, I have blasted smaller parts, including headers, and suspension parts. I just throw it into the garbage can, re-use the sand, and blast them inside the can. Pics of the frame project are here: http://community.webshots.com/user/douglasgrant

I am an industrial hygienist for the USAF. That is important because I recommend personal protective equipment (PPE) for all of the industrial processes that we do. I would suggest that you NEVER use a paper mask for painting, sanding, grinding or blasting. You just can't get a good seal with those.

Darkshadow gave you good advice, take it. Make sure that you have the proper filter canister for the job. Silicosis is no joke. It is a disease much like asbestosis. Without getting too technical, your body tries to get the silica out of your lungs by surrounding it, but it can't break it down and you are left with scar tissue in the area that you need for oxygen transfer.

Sweatin my nads off here is S. Texas......... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
