I have a 97 K2500 (8 lug) that I plan to put a SAS kit on. I already have several donor 73-87 chevy trucks sitting in my yard, to include a front D60, NP208s, springs, etc. Even though I already have the D60 (with matching gear ratio), it looks like the T-case swap will be a big hassle due to the speed sensor needed by the 4L80e. It looks like I would need a 91 burb NP241 with VSS, which are hard to find.

I plan on running 37" tires and a front locker. I plan to 4-wheel it harder than the stock IFS would allow. I also plan to tow with it.

Would it be worth the effort to use the chevy pass drop D60 even though I would need to swap in a t-case or would it be easier to try to find a driver drop ford axle to swap in?

Thanks

A friend of mine just was in the same problem, he sold his chev dana 60 and bought a ford 60 from an f-350. He used the stock t-case i think the 241 and bought the slip yoke eliminator and had shafts made. He also bought the oru bolt on kit and the steering. It was a litle expensive but came out good. Then had it for a while and sold the truck to buy a house. Its prob easier just to put in the ford axle than mess with changing the case, i would think so anyway but its been done here lots. Someone will chime in.....

I found a 91 NP241 from a K5 and I think it will work. It will have the 27 spline input so I will need to swap to 32 spline. I am wondering if the stock t-case in my 97 k2500 burb is a Np241? It is the pushbutton variety...

once my 99 is paid off i plan on doin a sas on it to be my more road legal trail rig. Im just gonna get a ford axle to put under it instead of messin with swapping the t-case. im already planning this build and I aint even done with my blazer:doah:

I have 32 spline input on the way for the NP241. Now all I need is the actual SAS kit. I have been comparing the ORU kit with the Sky kit and I am leaning toward the ORU because it seems to be more complete and is all bolt-on.

I have the following parts so far:
-Chevy D60 with 4.10 to match rear 14b
-NP241C pass-drop with VSS & 32 spline input
-Springs- stock 87 K20 fronts, 87 2.5 lift fronts, and some 52" chevy rears and some 57" f150 rears
-Crossover steering D60 arm
-Drag link
-Pitman arm

I plan on running single shocks and 37/12.50/R16.5 tires. I want as little lift as possible to fit the tires and get decent articulation. The Sky kit adds 6" lift and the ORU adds 3" so this is another reason to go with ORU.

Once I actually start the built I will start a new thread.

97 will require exaust mods for pass side drop stuff.

and read the kit info please. oru requires 4" lift springs minimum and it also gives you 3" on top of that.

you will be doing a big truck in the end.

if my money oru also bolt on easy and been around a lot.

I did the same thing with my 97 2500 but went with the chevy 60 and a round pattern 205, theres a thread that shows how to modify the tail housing on the 205 using the 241s reluctor ring in place of the 205s gear driven speedo gear, then tap the tail housing for the speed sensor, not too hard to do. u might able to do the same with the 208 not for sure though.

Have you checked off road direct. They have a complete kit for less then ORU

have you checked the 91 np241 input? i have 2 of them and they are 32 spline stock..not sure what yr they changed it but they went to 32 spline input on newer model t-cases. it maybe b/c they are out of 3/4 ton subs, but they are indeed 32 spline input shafts.

I will check out off road direct and compare with ORU.

I have the NP241 (has 27 spl input, but i have a new 32 to replace it) and just about all the parts (except the kit).

Thanks for all the info guys!

have you seen cajun4x4 build thread? i think thats his name, its a greenish z71 with very little lift and it looks bitchin. also running a GM 60 and 37s or close to it.

Update: I have the SAS about half done. I have the ORD kit mostly bolted in (I plan on welding as drilling the upper holes is a b^%tch! I have the pass drop NP241 installed (I need to modify the crossmember for it to work).

I am using 3 leafs from a 52" pack. They are soft as butter so I may add another leaf. I also plan to cut out a notch in the front crossmember because the springs hit there.
