I'm leaving town tomorrow on detachment and my wife got me a Sawzall for fathers day. It's a Craftsman 917183. I told her maybe she should return it and look at the stores on Fathers day to pick up a Makita or DeWalt for the same price. Recommendations? I have no idea how Craftsmans quality is on power tools. I have a 4.5" grinder, and its nice, but I know there are better brands. Staying under $100 too.

Here is the Craftsman

My 18.8v cordless Makita is badarse. I got it in a set that came with a drill, light, light impact gun, and carrying bag.

Milwaukee all the way. The motor is an 11 amp and will cut anything. Mine has the quick change blade and a detachable twist lock cord. Mine is a 6519-22 but it looks like they no longer use the twist lock cord.

I have the same one . I think they had problems with the twist lock cord so they quit making it

which sucks cuz thats one of my favorite features

Craftsman has been China made for a few years now- about the time they started closing shop on the "Mom & Pops" operation. My Craftsman is corded, my Milwaukee is battery. Either way, I still pick up the B&D 4.5 to cut metal with the cutting disc. Much faster, cleaner, and cheaper. A corded is better than a battery operated for general use around the home. A buddy cut a door opening into an outside wall with one. The battery powered one shines when going JYing. The only thing a Sawsall can do better is the reach.

FWIW, I no longer buy Craftsman, which I considered a good investment for the average guy (that wasn't into the Snap-on type bragging rights). I don't care for malls much either, and that is where I have to go now if I have to replace anything. Stanley and Walmart are cheaper, and they are in town, compared to 35+ miles away.

Damn, I sound old... Support America, support the local economy. Hard to do that anymore.

In popular mechanics magazine they did a test with a bunch of sawzalls and the Milwaukee was voted fastest cut and best over all.

Milawaukee all the way. The original and the best. Mine is an older model (still have to unscrew the allen to change a blade), but it still works awesome. It gets used weekly by my Dad for construction and I use it a couple times a month cutting cars up.

Milwaukee. I have one that was a hand me down from my grandfather to my uncle to dad to me. It was used for alll types of construction and demo work for who knows how many years. As it is now, I need to replace the brushes and it will run as good and fast as new.:wink1:

Another Milwaukee vote, I bought one of those orbital/swivel-head/quick-change/twistlock badass varieties on clearance at Home Despot last year and that thing rocks.
