Thought I would share seeing as it has been a long time(about 1 year) and I never really stopped working on the Blazer (aka the "Anti Prius"). OK so during the initial shake down out in Dumont Dunes there were several minor issues, 1st I lost use of the front drive shaft within 30 minuets (3 bolts disappeared and one was broke off and bent 90 degrees on the transfer case side) which slapped the cv joint all over down there. I removed the front drive shaft and continued to run. Now driving in sand with 2wd, 307 gearing and only one tire spinning at any given time Sucked. Went home and bought a used posi with 373 gearing installed it so I could at least track straight under power but now no 4wd as the gearing was mismatched, re torqued as many nuts as I could find and went out for the 2nd shakedown. That is where the dirt bomb donuts vid came from.. During this trip I also found out that I had NOT secured my battery as well as I thought and lost it out of the battery box and without the inner wheel wells it went right into the tire which in turn sucked it down and I ran it over causing it to actually explode(I have a picture of the battery I will insert it later) but not before ripping all the wires out of the 6al ignition box as well as the electric fuel pump relay(Pretty much everything connected to the battery).Everybody at camp thought I was going to pack it up at that point but I had wire and connectors so I spliced it back together stole the battery out of the motorhome and bunged it in and drove thru the whole next day like that. I'll continue later

wow, that's quite the battery story. never ran over and exploded one before. I'm glad you were able to keep playing though.

Love that video. Not as much as the vid where you light up those little tires on your street and getting the cops called on ya though. :eek1: :woot:

Pics of blown up battery. :deal:

So 2nd shake-down done (April 2011). Got home and repaired the wiring right. Decide to buy a 20ft open car trailer, buy it and make plans to go to Pismo. Truck seems to drive good but still no 4wd. Load the Anti Prius on the new trailer and head out. I had decided to load it on the trailer backwards so the motor was counter balancing and it would lighten the tongue weight. This turned out to be good for towing but BAD for the soft top as it turned into a tunnel ram and totally destroyed the top:doah:so no more soft top, well it did get about 1000 or so zip ties to hold to down to the cage.:haha: Get to Pismo truck runs good for about 3 hrs then some gremlin electrical thing started happening and the fuel pump would not get power but it was very intermittent.(Turned out to be the relay from the previous battery incident). Now the last day at Pismo and the motor seems to be missing and popping and total lack of power and runability, I barley get it on the trailer and I do mean barley and go home. Now home start to try and figure it out thinking the worst, sucked valve or even deeper problems :dunno:. It did seem electrical so I went to thinking it was the gear on the bottom of the distributor as I had trouble with that before. Went and pulled the cap off and HOLY MOTHER OF RUST BALLS BATMAN) I had not seen this before (No wonder it did not run) Totally took the distributor apart and cleaned it and gave it a nice coating of dielectric grease change out the bottom gear put it back in and TA-DA it ran like a champ again. I'll continue tomorrow.

holy crap!! I have never seen rust like that in a dist before. can't believe it ran as long as it did.

How old is that dizzy? Do you think that was all from Pismo, I mean I know rust and salty air, but really? Just wondering if there is something I can do to protect my Pro Billet from Pismo's wrath

It was/is not an old distributor per say(Cap and rotor were about 2mos old but it was not rusty like that when I changed them) and I did not check it right before Pismo. I think the Pro Billet's cap does not seal all that well to start with then there's the I run with out a hood and also live near the sea (1 mile) and the dew is pure salt as well. It may of just been a coincidence that it bloomed to the point of no workie while we were there:dunno:

Down here I used to live maybe a couple miles from the ocean and all the land was salty sand down to about 2ft before you hit clay.

I went through a few WTF:dunno: why is my motor running like crap all of a sudden.

It was always a few rust spots inside the cap and rotor...always!

SBD,

I've had issues with corrosion in my MSD cap also.... Though not rust like that.

Ive had the green corrosion on the electrodes and a blown-out center button. I didn't have many miles on the cap either. I've noticed that MSD has new designs with a small "mushroom breather" on replacement caps. My suspicion is that the sealed caps accelerate corrosion by not allowing humidity to escape as the engine warms up.

You might be dealing with something similar...

Yea that is the 2nd cap to have blown out the center button

I also discovered an MSD plug wire that was poorly crimped (my fault) so the resistance per foot was WAY out of spec. I have a theory that bad wires cause the MSD box to pump really high voltage through the cap to compensate, and that's what blows the center button.

:dunno:

Home from Pismo looking towards Desert season (Halloween 2011). Now it's time to make a decision, I wanted 4wd because the Anti-Prius with 2wd in the sand just blows. Should I tear into the burb and put the 3/4 ton axles (they have 410"s) on or just re-gear the front to match the rear to save some $$$ even thou I was still not totally stoked with the 373 gearing, though it was much better than the 307's. I went to J&S Gearing in Huntington Beach and made the decision to re-build both the 1/2 ton axles and re-gear them to 410's or 411's whatever it takes. My decision to keep it 1/2 ton was that it's more of a go fast style than rock crawler as with the posi instead of a locker, in the sand after your accelerating a wee bit it's on but I still can drive it on the street. The front dif had never been touched and was in pretty bad shape, seals shot, oil everywhere & massive slop at the pinion. The rear was not much better. I had put Bearing Savers in it when installing the posi unit so I knew the axles were not sweet and the posi had when they took it out just fell apart in the guys hands, springs & clutches everywhere. We beefed up the posi unit and put in stronger axles, thicker with no skinny taper. Installed the front drive shaft and now I'm thinking I'm good to go. Fast forward to Halloween. 1st trip of the season and shake-down #4 at Dumont Dunes. 5 hr drive, unload, prep truck and head out to just warm it up and check things out. I swear not 20 mins in and I hear the same clunking right under the trans hump that I heard last time I lost the front drive shaft, so I stop and get out to check and I'll be dammed 3 bolts gone and one bent right at the CV joint connecting to the Transfer Case. BITCH !!!!!#$#%&%#$%!!$%%%$%$#%#$!##!##!#. walk about 1 mile to the 1st camp I come to borrow a wrench (They gave me a ride back to the truck) and removed the front drive shaft. Back to 2wd. Drove back to camp and parked it for the night. Next morning, check the rest of the truck out and decide it was good to go (just 2wd) and head out for a quick am run on the flats about 15 miles each way, seems to be OK and run it decent. Turns out it was not ok I'll tell you later:popcorn:

bah, a little elmers glue and that thing will be good as new. :P

Sorry for the wait. I'm running a fairly large project right now and I'm just too plain-old tired to type by the time I get home . SO we were out at Dumont 2wd and things seemed ok. Tool out for that AM ride, get back to camp, chillin with food and drink talking about the Blazer , glance over at the front wheel area where the front drive shaft used to be and I notice the drivers side front hub looks odd, walk over to check it out and it's missing. Everything down to the one holey washer and nut next to the bearing is gone and there is metal shavings filling galore(P.S. Sand and grease are just lovely together--BFF's). WTF, those hubs have been on that axle since I bought it. O-YEA the differential guys just had it all apart IMG_1801.jpg

Lucky It did not come off while we were out,Lucky it did not mess up the axel or threads, Lucky I just happened to have a spare set of nuts and with a chisel, carb cleaner and some duct tape (to seal the hub off) I got to run it the rest of the weekend. Shake -down #4 done, We now are back home and It' got some new hubs and time to deal with that pesky drive shaft issue.

That's why I hate hiring out work. Costs money, and they usually do a poorer job than what you'd do yourself.

Truck is kickin ass btw.
