im pretty sure this is a dumb question but i have a dana 44 front axle out of a International 200, and i want to rebuild it and put 4.56 gears in it, would a chevy dana 44 rebuild kit work, this is my first time rebuilding a axle. any input would helpfull

Welcome to CK5. Check out that [SEARCH] button and type in 'dana 44 front rebuild' and see tons of info pop up. you will be reading for hours.

THANK YOU!!!!!!! i found so much info, but i was also wondering if the IH 44 is the same as a chevy 44

I would imagine it depends on what's in the kit.

Warning: I don't know squat about Cornbinders.

IIRC the knuckles and brakes are different for your axle than the Chebbie. I'd say, then, that bearings and seals for the pumpkin, and out through the shafts, could work.

Anything on the outers, though, you're on your own. Does that thing have drum brakes, perchance?

it has disc brakes and i found a fourm how to switch all the brakes and stuff like that to a chevy, im just wondering about the internals in the pumpkin like bearings and seals and axle shafts

ya 44 is basicly a 44 for truck axles .

best find the stamped in b.o.m # on the long tube near the diff housing. this is the vin / birth tag with all indo needed for parts on this. then when you call for stuff if thay ask you will have it ready.

i kinda had a feeling that a 44 is 44 but just wanted to make sure, i appreciate all the info

watch out i heard and seen the true i.h. axles used 8 stud spindle to knuckle unlike gm dodge 6 stud and ford 5 stud.

if you do have this then just swap the whole knuckle out with gm stuff.

i know were there is a whole 3/4 ton i.h. with a shot body and motor from sitting over 30 years in a barn and now its just a set of axles and 4 speed with divorced 205 . and the divorced i.h. 205 is pass drop to fit our trucks and same frame rail width so brackets n all will swap to ours with holes drilled. scrapped a old travell all suburban like unit 1 time and found this out. the tcase is in my colection now. and the 5 lug semi float dana 60 with trac-loc posi i sold for few hundred bucks.

i heard the perches are the same but im guna measure them anyways. and also would i have to do Xover steering?

The cross over would depend on how that axle is set up. If it is the same as a GM, it would be your preferrence to use cross over or not. Lots of pics using that search button for both factory steering and cross over. take your time and do your research and your swap correctly so you don't need to revisit it later.

If my memery serves me right, there is 1" difference betwen Dodge and GM which means 1/2" on each side.
I have seen a lot of people put the dodge axle on a GM, you will need to pull the springs in a bit to make it fit, but it does fit.
The rest depends on what you do with the outers.
I know Ford used a 5 lug spindle versus the 6 lug GM, can't remember what dodge used on their 1/2 ton but since they have 5 lug hubs, I would suspect they also use the 5 lug spindle. If so, you could still swap in GM hubs, or change the the whole knuckle out for GM unit, those are cheap to come by, but then again so are the GM complete axles. :dunno:

the crappy thing is that there isnt a whole lot of info on IHs. but i did find a forum on how to change evrything to a GM 8 lug on piarte4x4
