My tilt column is all over the place, but so is theupper end of my steering shaft (xj shaft) Will the normal tilt coumn fix tighten all this up?

I just fixed all this on my rig.

First inside the steering column there are (4) 1/4" screws that have vibrated loose.
You will need to tear down the entire column to get to these screws. Yer gonna need a couple special tools.

2nd, on the end of the steering column where it connects to the XJ shaft there is a bearing and coupler that probably slid down with all the vibrations.

I took a piece of 1.5" tube & a hammer and gently persuaded it back into position.

I did a thread on the steering column. I'll try to find it & link it.

I can help you fix yours if need be but I know you have the skills to do it yourself.

Some folks would say just go to the junkyard and buy a new one but they just vibrate loose too.

Thnks, I read your thread, on it...just researching one more thing to add to the list.

These old Saginaw tilt columns are a PITA. When I got my 89’ Burb last October it was so bad that it would hardly start (rack and rod were damaged) and the turn signals wouldn’t work. After ripping it down I found the bolts had been loose for so long that ball bearings were missing and the upper bowl had to be replaced along with the bowl itself. What a hassle. Fortunately, I had a couple spare steering columns lying around to pirate parts from.

Pblaze725 did a great write up on the early tilt columns but the later ones with the headlight dimmer in the column are a bit more complicated as there several more little intricate pieces to deal with towards the top.

Here is a diagram of the same basic column used in the later columns with the column mounted dimmer switch. This is a 1995 G-van so it has a brake interlock switch that our trucks don’t but outside of that this diagram is the same.
