I was checking out winches at 4 wheel parts and the sales man was telling me the only winch to get is a Warn. I ask about Mile marker and the other brand they have and he kept telling me that I need a Warn. He kept telling me the the other brands had to be used every month or they would not work when you need it. Is this just Sales BS. What are you using?? What size should I be looking at for a blazer with 14bolt and d60??

It depends on your needs. How often do you use it, what kind of wheeling, etc. I personally am a Warn guy. I think there winches are the best of the commonly available. There are other good winches out there but if you wheel alot and are going to use it often then you might as well get the best.

I personally am not a Milemarker fan. I would save for a Warn or do some homework on some other winches and see what people have and how they work. Ramsey is another decent brand. I have a couple good buddies with Ramsey's that have done really well for them but I have another friend who has had problems with his Ramsey's.

As far as how much weight winch. General Rule is 1.5x weight of the truck. A full bodied K5 with 1 tons is going to weigh in arond 6K I would guess. So your looking at about a 9K winch. Lighter rigs can get away with 8K's but its your call to fit your needs. All winches are not created equal when it comes to rated capacities. A Warn 8274 is rated for 8K but is very underrated. A Warn 9500 is also underrated, it will pull a house and is more then enough for a K5.

I have seen Warn 9500's in action and let me tell you they are impressive. I see them on the front of mild Jeeps and I laugh because that winch is WAY overkill for any Jeep unless it is truely hardcore.

P.S. Lesson #2 Four Wheel Parts SUCKS!!! There prices are good but there business practices SUCK and many times there counter people are idiots.

Lot depents on your use. You can't go wrong with a Warn though:D They are the best but that doesn't mean you can't get by with something else. I'd look in the 8 - 9.5 rated range.

Hoss is giving you great advice.

I wans't plannig on buying from them. I just wanted to get some measurments off the box. I thought I would ask a couple of questions I walked out more confused.

Dunno bout 4wp....As for what winch a 1 ton K5- A 9500lb would due the trick. Or an 8274. Although, if you aren't to concerend about line speeds, jump to a 12k and have piece of mind. :)

Yep, a 12K is nice for shear pulling power. I have the Warn 12K on my truck and it pulls hard but is slow. That slow linespeed and the weight of the 12K are its only downfalls but they are more then made up for by the strength and reliability of it.

I also have a 12K on my K5. Very slow, but that is ok for me. It is funny how popular you become when people are really buried and you have a heavy vehicle and a big winch! :D

ok i am gonna kinda go against the rest of the croud so far.

i have a mile marker 9500 (bought from 4wp) had it on the front of my 98.5 dodge cummins 3/4 ton 4x4 and never had a problem pulling it. yes the general rule is 1.5 times your vehicle weight and if you throw a snatch block in there, its suppose to double the pulling power.

as for warn im not totally against them, the 8274 winch is a badass winch and definately under rated. i also have a warn (bellvue) 5687 which is a pulling b**ch.

half of my wheeling group has warn the other half has mile marker. a buddies warn (not sure what size but its on a cherokee) brand new busted the drum on like the second time used. he was pulling another jeep out of the snow. they welded the drum and it broke again the 4th time out and wouldnt free spool out. not saying warn is a bad winch. he just got a bad one.

what winch you get depends on which you like, kinda like if you buy a chevy, ford, or dodge or etc.

what about a ramsey? they are good winches too are they not? I keep hearing how good the 8274 is which makes me even more stoked on my recent very clean 8274 buy, 150 bucks was a steal. yea! :D

As an owner of a MM E 12'000 and a Warn 8274. I will recoment the warn hands down. The mile marker has given me problems since day one. The warn had issues with the soliniod pack when new but was replaced under warrenty and everything works great now.

I bought a Ramsey ProPlus 9000 back around '00 or so. Due to various reasons it sat unused in the garage for a couple of years, but after installing it worked fine for a short time then I had to clean off all of the contacts...worked fine since. I try to stay out of deep mud, which when stuck normally requires the most force to pull you out, but a single line pull as always been enough for my 9000 to pull me out.

While I would tend to say Warn is probably the best brand, they also have the highest price. For winch issues on the trail, I've seen both Warn and other brands break down.

Several guys in our club have 12k Milemarkers. One had a motor burn up when relatively new but was replaced under warranty and seems to work fine, expect for the remote acts up some. The other broke some of the housing off because the cable got bunched up on one side, but the winch still works fine.

Warn 8274 is definatley a worth $$$$winch, i recently just found out how good a deal i got for mine. I like this winch, warn is def. the best winch company out there.

As far as electric winches go I think warn takes the cake but I have MM 12000 Hydro and I have been nothing but happy with it. Its not going to set any land speed records, but it will pull like a train all day long. It seems to pull effortlessy. Couple of buddies have warn 9500ti and they are more than stong enough but they make all kinds of noise and they get hot kind of quick under heavy loads. At a HEAVY pull the hydo is almost as fast as the electric too. From what ive seen and read I dont think I would ever own a MM electric, seem to be 2 different animals.

I have an 8K warn on my K5 (I got it before I new the 1.5Xs rule:doah: ) It works ok for the wheelin we do but I have stalled it while doing a side pull on another K5 that was wedged up against a "cliff". I will prolly just keep it as the K5 will be going on a diet or becoming a buggy.

which warn 9.5 is the "underrated" puller: xp, ti, or si. I was hoping to either get a 9.5xp or jump up to the M12000

the 9500 HS & TI's I have been around pulled HARD & fast. The 12K pulls hard but is slow.
