school me on....

just so i know what I'm looking at.... i'd like a NV4500, but i think this 96 i'm going to look at, is an auto... how are the OD 727's again?

I liked em back in my early's muscle cars... :haha:

by 96 its gonna be a 47rh/re...

i wanna say that rh (which was the mechanical lockup trans) was only 94-95, i think 96 was first year for Re, which is an electronically locked up trans. in that case, its the same tranny "basically" that they ran from 96-07...sucky stock, but easily built to do what ever you want of it.

so i think i may have found a rig... actually haven't seen it yet, but a good knowledgeable friend turned me on to it and says it's super clean...

86 SLT with the auto.... SRW.. lot's of recent work, all new front end, brakes, batteries, tires, and some other maintency type things... 180 grand on it.. which is the area I'm looking for.. the motors just getting broke in nice at that point... think it's a 3/4, 2500, not a 3500...

I think it's black... he's asking 6, but I'm pretty sure I could get it for 5500.. got a few mores weeks of saving to get in that range... but from what I've been seeing on CL, that looks like a pretty good deal.... most of the real clean sec gen 4x4's i've been seeing have been in the 8 to 14 range...

so... my question of the day is, tho my friend Don says the trans has no known issues, what kinda coin is it to get a pretty nice auto done for one of these? couple grand? obviously I'd probably add a cooler to it, maybe an external filter..

Assuming you mean 96? If so your looking for basic reliable tranny would be looking at $500 for valve body (can go cheap and get basic shift kit) $12-1500 billet torq convert plus another few hundis for a basic clutch and steels rebuild kit. Doing that with stock shafts would last you to bout 500hp as long a you aren't doing boosted launches or crap like that.
Front end work is a great thing bcuz the steering/ ball joints on those are a huge issue. So if he went thru all that that's an easy 2k worth of work to get done.

Sounds like a very decent priced truck. Especially if it's clean.
Watch for the cracke dash, and the rust in the bottom of doors. Though in sure you can handle both of those issues no problems. ( $35 will get you a dash rug if it bothers you)

Let us know if you get it

doh, yeah typo there... thanks... I'm hopeful, it's a little more than i want to spend, but i think it'll be worth it.. i'll be stoked to have a Cummins...

tho in all reality, i don't put enough mileage on any vehicle anymore to justify a dizzle, but at least now I know i'll have a very capable towrig for long trips and such.....

I know this is a third gen, but I want this.. 24v, wish it was a manual tho... they seem quite rare, EVERYTHING'S an auto... . put a tube utility bed and gooseneck in the back...

That is a pretty truck :waytogo:
Keep in mind , if you pick up a 24v, or a common rail, plan an extra $600 or so for a good lift pump / filter set up (air dog or FASS) your injection pump (24v) and injectors (cr) will thank you :D

Just throwing it out there, I have a b&w turnover ball gooseneck hitch ( will fit 94-01 for sure) I'm looking to get rid of, heck if you were interested I might even bring it up to ya so I could sneak a look at the K5  :D

thanks... I'll more than likely end up with a 12v and auto..... and more than likely a sec gen p-pump, that's what I've been shopping..... it's like 50 to 1 for the auto's tho.. thought I'd peak at the post 98 market...

figure I'll start shopping now, need it in april...

and when I gooseneck it, it'll be incorporated into the tube bed...

Wow that thing is BLACK....I like the engine description: CUMMINS DIESEL...

cuz just saying diesel wasn't good enough.

I'm dying to do a tube bed on a pu.... I'd much prefer a square body with a Cummins, but it's gotta be bought.. so a Dodge it'll be...

I shoulda jumped on that one I saw in like Indiana, CC with a cummins and a flat bed... 5 g's... :doah:

Build it and they will come....so you know you gotta have a build thread right?

yeah, basically I want to build Kert's rig with a Cummins, shortened up a bit with a tube bed.. dually on 4" with 35's... big mud flap on each corner hangin under the bed...

I want boxes like this hangin under my bed on each side..

If you're planning on an auto and want to modify the motor much, plan on spending nearly as much on a trans as the truck itself (until you get into 24V motors). Seriously.

The 4500 does have issues as does the Getrag, it's simply part of having a medium duty motor ahead of light duty transmissions (even though they're 1 ton rated, the 5.9 Cummins is more than that). The HD transmissions (G360, NV4500 and NV5600) for light duty trucks all still have some individual pitfall behind the medium duty motor. As time went on and the motors got more powerful they changed transmissions/parts but that covers the era we're talking about.

Honestly I don't know a ton about P-pump 12V's but I believe that they don't have variable timing (worse in some people's eyes).

when i got my dually i went for manual.. i had a 98 dakota.. truck served me very well but made me dispize dodges auto transmissions... very hard shifts and always searching for gears.. i hated it so much i vowed to never drive a dodge auto again... oh and somehow a hole rusted in the pan and all the fluid leaked out one day..

'98.5 24v nv4500 D60D80 quad cab short box.

That's what it looks like with H2s and 33s. Never should have sold it, kick myself all the time over that truck.

Ppump.is static timing. Not an issue. Put a couple thousand into a 47rh BEFORE its hurt. Will go a long long ways. The lift pump on a 24v is key, just as important is getting rid of the banjo bolts and the one restrictive hard line between the filter housing and vp44.

Is a 2wd completely out of the question?

You can always convert down the road, the stock front suspension is junk anyways

eh, that's a bit much of a project for something I wanna DD...

even down the road I certainly wouldn't have minded ripping the whole front out, new springs, hp 60, etc.. it's more the trans/t-case aspect that turns me off to it... plus, those projects would need to be "weekend doable"

there hasn't been a lack of 4x4's on the market, for sure.. about 1/2 have been 2wd that i've seen.. but you can definitely pick up the 2wd for a pretty good price...

hehe, I want to run 35's on a duallie...... actually, i just want Kert's tire set up... ;)
