school me on....

See that idea always still strikes me as dumb. It may well be different where someone else if from. But around here, bearly 1 in every 25 trucks on the road in Alberta is a 2wd. If you want a 4wd buy a 4wd, if you want a 2 find a 2. They both came from the factory, don't need to reinvent the wheel. Just by what you want in the first place. Thats just my opinion of course.

how is that second gen front 1 ton running gear? survive 35 to 37's? or is a SAS a smart upgrade on the 4 x 4's? I do despise balljoints...

Lotsa guys do it, after upgrade the steering to 3rd gen style. Wears out bj's faster but not unreasonable. You'd want to ditch the CAD though.

You kingpin, roller bearing type guys look down on the unit bearing balljoint diffs. Well they're not bad, for dd type 4wd trucks. Not at all. And honestly I'll put my balljoint unit bearing Super60 up against anything out there on the street.

I agree with Demon, in 332,000 miles on my old 00, I only replaced one set of balljoints and did unit bearings twice, I even cheaped out on the unit bearings with some cheapies a local store sold for 130 or so.
Keep in mind, this was not a all highway DD, it was my work truck, tow rig etc. I hit the scrap yard once with a load of rebar in the bed that weighed 3860lbs , I had a 8' commercial snow plow on it for 3 seasons , and towed approx 10-15k miles a year with it moving my equipment all over the place, stop and go DC traffic to WV mountains , highways to 4wd mudding through job sites , so it was used the way a diesel truck was meant to be
